Tally mini vertical

Tasted Monday, June 19, 2023 by G.M. with 84 views

Introduction

A protracted vertical, with four bottles drunk over 2 weekends. These wines show place and vintage. More than just generic Coonawarra, this is more specific, more granular, a single vineyard terroir. Distinct ‘Tally’ thread running through them, but expressed very differently each vintage.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

A very elegant Tally. Understated, yet profound. Cranberry. Red licorice. Leather. Mandarin. Beetroot. More developed than the 2005,06,07, and more closed. A pleasure now, but this feels like it’s still on the up (94 Excellent wine)

  • 2005 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Cassis and vanilla. Smooth and delicious. Dark fruit and mocha. Slightly acidic. Still quite primary, with plenty of bright fruit and acid. Swathes of grainy tannin give it some real stuffing. Drinking really well. (93 Excellent wine)

  • 2006 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve 95 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Impenetrable colour, with ruby rim. Cassis, pencil shavings, violets, and just a dash of Coonawarra mint. Super intense and long on the palate. Dark berry fruits and touch of game. This is a classic. Deeply satisfying. Comfortably Cru Bordeaux quality. Beautiful now and should last as long as you want to keep her. (95 Superb wine)

  • 2007 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

A monolith. Acid wrapped in steely sheets of tannin. Drying, challenging, yet compelling in a masochistic way. One to admire more than enjoy. Not sure that this will improve with time, but perhaps one to lay down for another couple of decades just in case. Not much joy now, and certainly don’t see it falling apart anytime soon. (92+? Very good wine)
