Quick after dinner tasting at Park90. Expected little but went away very impressed by these wines, especially as these are considered off-the-beaten track for me.
Saw this on the list for a good price and decided to give it a go. Those familiar with my palate would know that I typically detest such wines, and I haven't been a fan of the Antica Terras that I have tried either.
Surprisingly perfumed and restrained nose, the palate wasn't overdone either despite being clearly a new-world Syrah. The sweetness of fruit added to rather than detracted from the wine, as it helped to make the wine less dense and heavy. Well-balanced despite the plushness, not overly-oaked or extracted; with a menthol note on the finish. Would have been interesting to open a Cayuse of the same vintage that I've been sitting on for some time alongside this.
95% Macabeo Viñas Viejas, 5% Garnacha Blanca. Aged in stainless steel but underwent battonage. Flinty, Burgundian nose, but palate had more weight and less acid. Slight bitterness on the finish.
Apparently modelled after a CdP, but felt this was more of a new-school Grenache that Comando G was purported to be. Fresh red strawberry fruit, with a hint of kirsch. Superb lift and freshness, seamless texture. Fantastic find, and much better than any Comando G/Daniel Landi that I have tried at 1/2 the price.
Mainly Garnacha but modelled after Burgundy. Suspected this was a slightly off-bottle with a distracting lactic note on the nose (wasn't present when opened for the tasting but I had this later), but palate was elegant and had pure, crunchy red fruit. Still preferred El Cismatico, however.
