Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Elio Grasso Barolo Riserva Rüncot 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Strawberries on the nose, airy and aromatic red floral notes, and new dried oak or tree bark. Love how there are no sharp nor aggressively high-toned cranberry notes on the nose.

Palate showed incredibly fresh and pleasantly tart cherries in a gentle manner, with a hint of bright strawberries. Dried and light oak, with fresh, damp soil notes. Fine and firm tannin on the finish, giving the impression of heavily steeped tea. Awesome freshness, it’s at a good spot now. The acidity is very open and refreshing, not harsh or sharp at all like other Barolo's I've tasted before. Plenty of more life to go.

Personally, pop and pour was best and immediate consumption. After a couple of hours, dusty elements appeared on the palate, showing the wines strong tannic structure. The dusty tannin seemed to put a burden on the swiftness the wine initially had. 95-94, yeah.. you read that right.

  • 2019 Cheval des Andes 94 Points

Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Vistalba

An initial heavy, thick moss notes on the nose with that old yet intense leather funk. Deep earth and wet autumn leaves. With time, the funk loosens up and integrates more with the fruit. The funk doesn't blow off completely but does fade in intensity.

Surprisingly, the palate showed ripe blackberries and good dark blue berry fruit, and deep black soil. Pulverized oak and steeped tea on the finish with a nice mineral finish. The ripe fruits has this coating on the minerals and oak, and slowly releases its grasp as it trails into the finish. Absolutely nothing like the nose. The nose definitely leads you thinking it’s gonna be something funky but the palate tells you otherwise. What a surprising turn of events. Maybe this just needed some bottle time for the modern style to really show.

  • 2018 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch 97 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

I looked at it.. I was just passing by.. I noticed it, came to a stop, and looked at it.

Aromas of ripe dark red and black fruits, with the profile of the fruits becoming more serious being propped up by dark graphite, pencil shavings, and deep earth. A good floral airiness graces the fruits with aromatic earthiness.

Palate showed black and dark fruits with a backing of savory graphite, dry tree bark and deep earth. There's a gentle but firm woody spice like cedar. The fruit is brooding, with restraint. Plenty of life ahead and would love to see how this shows in another 4-6 years.
