One of my favourite champagnes last year and this bottle was just as good. Similar impressions to my previous experience - rich, toasty and just so delicately balanced. Exquisite wine and think it converted a few non-Champagne people around the table. Best '02 that I have tasted alongside Krug.
My contribution. Possibly '90s label? These old NVs can be a roulette but if the cork doesn't fail, they are pretty indestructible, Rich, toasty but the sweetness and opulence in its youth had mellowed to give a pretty linear wine. Not the most complex but so fresh and pleasurable.
One of those whites trying to mimick Burgundy but thought this was done quite well. Reductive nose, well-judged oak use and made in a driven, linear style. Some pear and butterscotch notes. Good discovery.
Generous pull from the host. Not advanced but thought this was quite flabby for a Roulot. Apparently the first bottle was much more premoxed. Think I have pretty much given up on this producer, which is unfortunate since when they are on they are stunning.
Was a casual crowd so wanted to bring something interesting. Thought this showed even better than my previous bottle, with the power and sweetness dialled up a notch for a more complete wine. Waxy, nutty texture but with superb acidity and concentration. The sheer weight of this reminded me of the Unendlich but thought this was a much more balanced wine.
Brought this for the host who was born in '90. Despite being from an unheralded plot, still very much alive and kicking. Made in the Bordeaux-style of Francois with toasty oak and coffee notes on the nose; prominent tannins on the palate. Reasonably resolved compared to the grander plots which can be still tight and brooding at 20-30 years of age.
