  • 2015 Iona Sauvignon Blanc Elgin 89 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): A light lemon-coloured wine with a slight petillant note. Ester-driven aromas of peardrops, snow pea, cut grass, lemon zest, and apple. A fresh bright entry with crunchy apple acidity the highlights prominent apple, grass, and lemon towards grapefruit flavours that is leaning towards the lighter style that is focussed, delineated and enjoyable. Finishes short to medium with a hint of celery salt.
96 Semillon 4 Semillon. Portion 2%? Is barrel fermented.

  • 2015 South Hill Sauvignon Blanc 85 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Pale lemon colour with aromas of guava, cut grass, tarragon, ripe lemons, and a touch of sherbet. The palate mirrors the nose, featuring spiky acidity and fleshy fruit. However, the acidity feels somewhat disjointed and bites on the back palate, resulting in an edgy and aggressive mouthfeel. Closes rather green and a little 1-D. Doesn’t feel integrated.

  • 2014 Elgin Ridge '282' Sauvignon Blanc 83 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Mid yellow in colour with some developed aromas exhibiting sweaty and ripe orange peel, squashed pear and apricot. The palate feels rather ripe and borders on flabbiness whilst there is a noticeable marzipan botrytis quality that detracts. Perhaps better in youth but seems the excitement has been sapped out of this wine.

  • 2011 Oak Valley Mountain Reserve 89 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Mid-yellow, the nose is oaky with toast, clothes peg, and spice. However, there is plenty of grapefruit zest, lemon, orange and beeswax to offset and give some appeal to the wine.
The palate reflects the spicy oak nuances, good ripeness of fruit and a pithy texture. The oak was a little overpowering, and the alcohol somewhat noticeable. Nonetheless, it remains a pleasing wine if a little edgy and coarser on the finish. A fuller-bodied, punchier Bordeaux blend whose boldness and powerful dry style were good, if not that charming.

  • 2012 Highlands Road Sine Cera 91 Points

(Tasted Blind): Light to medium yellow with lovely aromas of orange peel, Meyer lemon and lime blossom. It is very white Bordeaux-like with a vibrancy and poise enhanced by a pithy texture. There is plenty of ripe fruit; the mid-palate is more linear with a subtle warmth to it.
The alcohol was a little higher than expected, but the finish is impressive, maintaining an upright position with a backbone of acidity and gentle oak tones. Blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon. 15% fermented in 3rd fill French oak,

  • 2014 Glen Elgin Farm Chardonnay Winters Drift 84 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Light to mid yellow with aromas of abundant ripe yellow peach and teist of citrus. The palate feels fatter and heavier, though with an odd chemical note, reminiscent of bandages. Some fruit is still lurking, but the finish is peculiar and falls away abruptly.

  • 2012 Almenkerk Chardonnay 87 Points

Flight 3 - Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Elgin Vintners Pinot Noir 88 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Light garnet brick red with a bouquet showing noticeable oak influences, spice, and ripe black fruit that border on jam. • 2012 Shannon Vineyards Merlot Mount Bullet 92 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

(Tasted Blind): Mid to dark red-black colour. The nose presents herbs accompanied by crushed red fruits, stalky undertones with red plum and a slight cedar note in a nod to Bordeaux.
Plenty of ripe red fruits are on the palate, and the texture is clay-like, with lovely fleshy Bing cherries and red plums. A narrow tannin, the wine has good concentration, and the finish is persistent, leaving with gentle spices and fine-grained tannins.

  • 2013 Richard Kershaw Wines Syrah Clonal Selection Elgin

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

It showed well, with plenty of fruit with a smooth pepper infused mid-palate and some charcuterie. I felt I knew it, so left off the score.

  • 2011 Thelema Syrah Sutherland 82 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

Tasted Blind): Deep black-red with ripe but oxidative notes with a hint of VA that spoils the nose.
The palate is a little jammy hot and lacks freshness. Despite some noted pepper and wood smoke, the wine feels over-extracted, and the oxidation makes it ponderous.
