Dinner at Peter's

Introduction

Peter pulled together an exceptional meal and curated a truly enjoyable evening with the added bonus that I could stagger home in 10 mins. A rare occasion where the only theme was 'bring a bottle', which worked out really well - must do more like this. I missed off the Champagne aperitif because I couldn't read the bloody label and I can't describe Champers at the best of times anyway.

Flight 1 - META nibbles - Torres/ Gordals/ mixed nuts (1 Note)

  • 2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chardonnay Bourgogne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Restrained in character and scale, but I found this rewarded close attention. Sweet Amalfi lemon and a subtle perfumed character - nothing too pronounced here but finely balanced. The palate reflects the nose very accurately, with no more than medium body and some freshening acidity. Really lovely stuff.

Flight 2 - Roast squash, burrata, pomegranate, basil (2 Notes)

  • 2018 Hatzidakis Winery Assyrtiko Skitali 92 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

With a sense of smoky power, leesy depth and ripe citrus fruit this could initially be mistaken for an extraverted quality white Burgundy. But there's a salty liquorice edge on the nose which follows through to the dense, rich palate. Lots of body and ripeness with some fine grip, a hint of sweetness to the orange and lemon fruit and a long almost chewy finish. Really came together with air - a big, distinctive wine which really held its own in elevated company.

  • 2017 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétilles Blanc 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

This struck me as good, classy village level Burg but nothing to really get too excited about. Because one is legally obligated to reference reduction when it comes to PYCM, I found it elevated and worked in harmony with the overall bouquet - masterfully done, although other tasters just didn't get on with it.

Flight 3 - Remnants of the starter (2 Notes)

  • 2020 Sons of Sugarland Syrah 91 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Polkadraai Hills

Clean, smooth nose of tapenade and black cherry- really cool, fruity and appealing. It's good now but needs time to soften structure, which is pretty grippy and tight. Good potential here I'd guess

  • 2012 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 93 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

The nose is resolved and plummy, bright raspberry with smoke and Heinz ketchup. Delicacy, power and sweetness. If the nose feels developed the palate is still very young - masses of fine tannins and searing acidity, concentrated and fresh red fruit. Really distinctive and compelling

Flight 4 - Prime rib of beef (holy moly), cavolo nero, Tuscan white beans (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Antinori Tignanello 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Thoroughly enjoyed this: all the energy and angularity you could want- fresh and deep cherry fruit, mint and roast herbs, some meaty notes- but really it's the heady fruit which dominates proceedings. Primary fruit on the palate, tangy and rich, with a velvety smoothness punctuated by zippy acidity. The character is totally in my sweet spot and just had the 'thing'. Loved it.

  • 2008 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A sense of cool tightness plays against depth and richness of cassis, cedar, mint. The oak influence is still quite fresh and with big tannins and a sense of hardness on the palate this feels like it has decades in the tank to soften and unfurl.

Flight 5 - Still picking at that beef, thanks... (1 Note)

  • 2021 Ridge Zinfandel Pagani Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Really interesting nose of raspberry milkshake, exuberant and eager to please. New leather, milk chocolate and pot pourri - but for all that it's not cloying. Rich red fruit on the palate, quite silky and very drinkable while retaining some structure and drive.

Flight 6 - Baked custard and raspberries, courtesy Thomas (1 Note)

  • 1996 Château Doisy-Daëne 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

No fireworks but this was a lovely end to a great meal: sweet barley sugar, apricot, a hint of saffron. Fresh acidity carried it through to a reasonably long finish.

Closing

What a fun evening. Toddler swimming lesson at 9 the next morning less so.
