Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 243 88 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is more citrus-driven with fresh tones of peaches, biscuits, red apples, yellow flowers, spiced pears, kumquats, and toasty notes. The citrus flavors are balanced but it lacks depth to the nose. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and balanced with integrated, high acidity that is a bit refreshing. This is decent enough, but there is something lacking across the nose and palate that would make this much more enjoyable.

  • 2015 Louis Roederer Champagne Blanc de Blancs 90 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is upfront and fresh with almond paste, hazelnuts, red apples, peaches, biscuit, and some brioche. There is decent depth and expression here, but it lacks some complexity. The Medium bodied feel carries through the upfront quality of the nose along with crisp, high acidity. This was a step up from the 243, but it still fell a bit flat for me. It just lacks depth, expression, and tension that I would expect and want from this.

  • 2015 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

This shows off more distinct autolytic tones with a good bit of warm pastry dough and fresh bakery notes that lean into tones of red apples, kumquat, toast, pears, and some biscuits. The Medium bodied feel is textured and balanced with integrated, high acidity. There is a mouthwatering quality to the acidity and the autolytics show through well. But, this really just lacks that extra gear of depth across the nose and palate that would greatly add to the wine.

  • 2015 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is fresh and succulent with forward tones of nectarines, limes, quince, apples, honeydew melons, custard notes, warm pastries, pears, yellow flowers, and some vanilla bean. There is good complexity, but this lacks the depth and elegance that I normally would associate with Cristal even at this level of youth. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and refined with crisp, high acidity. There is good texture to this, but that lack of depth is still present as the tones sit more on the surface or with just one layer. For me, this was disappointing. The 2015 vintage has been all over the place for me and this was a bit of a miss. I expected a more forward take, but this lacks depth and the melon note bothers me a bit too much. I would love to try it again and in a setting where I can spend more time with it, but it won't be on my dime.
