Mainly Vosne and Chambolle GCs

Introduction

Good line-up of mostly GCs from Vosne and Chambolle but abiding memory will be the power trip in the kitchen that resulted in us getting Colony food at Summer Pavilion.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Brought as an aperitif. Guesses ranged from early ‘90s to 2013, prominent dosage but not overbearing. A pleasurable, fuss-free pairing with food that once again showed that these old NVs are indestructible and so enjoyable at the right spot of maturity.

  • 2012 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chateniere Blanc Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Guessed new world Chard because of the lack of tension and tropical, sweet fruit. Similar to the previous bottle that someone else brought at the end of last year, unidentifiable as a Burg. Either poor provenance from the same source or Lamy didn’t do well in 2012.

  • 2021 Simon Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Like this producer a lot but unfortunately this was a miss. Guessed SB because of the overt greenness so when it was revealed to be a Burgundy, thought that it could only be a 2021. Only a hint of lime fruit, overall quite lean and anaemic to me.

  • 2013 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots Vieille Vigne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Leftovers from a magnum. Clearly Fourrier with lifted nose and candied red fruit with some spice. Enjoyable but the shrillness from the vintage was distracting.

  • 1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Only made from ‘99-‘02, apparently DRC fruit which I previously thought only Potel received. Guessed BM from a warm vintage like 2009, showed remarkable similarities to the other BMs tonight. Some barnyard on the nose that blew off, youthful and vibrant with a silky texture that was more apparent with air that made it more Vosne-like. Superb concentration and balance.

  • 2004 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Very green and medicinal so clearly was a '04 or '11. Ripe blue fruit but the herbaceous nature of the wine made this borderline undrinkable for me. Didn’t get a chance to revisit but apparently got better with air.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Slightly cloudy in colour, nose was not completely clean with some old-school funk. Hedonistic, plummy fruit with prominent acidity. Good, but not at the same level as the epic ‘97 last year.

  • 2010 Louis Jadot Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Brought for a friend, similar impressions to the last time I had this six months ago. Expressive, floral nose of cherry fruit with some Vosne spice. Didn’t have the same weight on the palate as the others but loved the elegance of this. Still youthful but fruit-forward enough to drink today.

  • 1999 Dominique Laurent Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Clearly BM but didn’t recognise this as a Laurent. Rich, old-school Burgundy with integrated oak. Very good but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to revisit and have more of an impression.

  • 1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Bonnes Mares 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

My contribution. Cloudy in colour with obvious mushroom, sous bois notes and some wild berries. Definitely advanced when compared against the vibrant RSV from the same maker and vintage.

  • 2007 Domaine de L'Arlot Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Wow my first instinct was '06 or '08 H-N RSV, almost everyone managed to land on RSV for this. Had almost everything I look for in a red Burg - a sensual, lovely texture; beautifully pure and spice-driven cherry fruit. Only quibble was that it was slightly thin on the palate. An underrated producer.

  • 2015 Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot Echezeaux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Cooked, completely maderized.

  • 2014 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Some similarity to the '07 RSV but I had a nagging doubt that this could have been a BM (theme was GC). When it was revealed to be not a Vosne, immediately guessed Bertheau as the producer. Slightly advanced for its age with some mushroom notes developing, but very pretty, transparent dark cherry fruit.
