  • 2013 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

2nd bottle in 3 months. This was showing much better than the 1st I had. Classic puligny textures with white flowers, peaches and lemon curd on the opening which ensued with melon, chalk and meyer lemons on the palate. There was grand cru typicity of weight and power on the palate but there was something lacking in the mid-palate in the tension and concentration department. Nonetheless, this is lovely and delivering plenty of pleasure today.

  • 2019 Kongsgaard Chardonnay 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

On first pour, this was interestingly tropical and exotic with pineapples, honeysuckle wax, jasmine and toast wafting from the glass. On the palate, this was somewhat of a gray area between precision and flabbyness - to an extent that it appeared slightly disjointed. There is fantastic acid here and good fruit concentration but this I think needs more time.

  • 2019 Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

This definitely needed a bit of time in glass to show well. On first pour, this was reductive with lemon oil, grapefruit and yellow flowers. Palate was showing too lean with shrilling acidity. Over the course of lunch, I revisited this a few times and towards the 2 hour mark, this started to blossom quite nicely - grapefruit and lemon oil still dominated the bouquet with jasmine, yellow peaches and starfruit coming through on the palate. Great balance with acidity here on the higher side for 2019s but then again Caroline Morey's wines typically have a bit more acidity.

  • 2013 Roagna Barbaresco Vecchie Viti Pajè 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Old school Nebbiolo expression that puts a smile on your face. While youthful, this was showing well with dark red cherries, roses, sage and smoke on the opening silky red fruit, sage and almond skin on the palate. There is high fruit concentration here alongside a silky tannin structure with just so much sensuality and balance here. Give it time and you will surely be rewarded!

  • 2013 Roagna Barolo Vecchie Viti Pira 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Old school Nebbiolo expression that puts a smile on your face. While youthful, this was showing lovely with dark red cherries, cloves, roses and smoke on the opening with silky red fruit, sage, concentration and balance on the palate. So etheral yet you just know there is further upside from here on forth - this is more than capable of going the distance.

  • 2012 Roagna Barbaresco Vecchie Viti Montefico 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Old school Nebbiolo expression that puts a smile on your face. This was showing beautifully with dark red cherries, cloves, sage, thyme and dried flowers on the opening with morels, cedar, bayberries and fresh cut grass on the palate. There is high fruit concentration here alongside a silky tannin structure, there is so much balance here that you can have this today or if you have patience and self-control, this is more than capable of going the distance.

  • 2013 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Old school Nebbiolo expression that should put a smile on your face - in time to come.

Massolino's VR plots for me needs quite a bit more time to really show its beauty and this was a little too young for my liking. Dark fruit, roses, and cedar opens the bouquet with chocolate, cedar, unriped strawberries and black plums on the palate. Good fruit concentration amidst a brick wall of tannins. There is good potential here and a sense that this could be a great barolo but it wasn't it today for me.

  • 2015 Roagna Barbaresco Pajè 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Old school Nebbiolo expression that would, in time to come, shine no doubt. There certainly is great potential but it is certainly not complete today. Roses, elegant red fruit, strawberries and sage on the opening while palate shows much darker - black plums, cedar, dried roses and fresh cut grass on the palate. There is high fruit concentration here alongside a sturdy tannin structure and with time surely this will soften. Good finesse and power today but keep it away in the darkest part of your cellar!

  • 2020 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

When it's so dark in glass yet smells like burgundy, then it definitely belongs in the trio of vintages (2018, 2019 and 2020). While immensely extracted with ripe plums, black berries and cloves on the bouquet, this is so silky and balanced on the palate with cassis, prunes and stems (the good kind). Great fruit concentration and power and the short 2 hours at lunch, this unfurled with layers of silky red and black fruit. I would like to revisit this in 8 to 10 years but this is lovely today.

  • 2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

The Marechale is always a very nice one to drink. Had this vintage before but today's showing was much better. Pretty on the opening with mulberries, violets, some earth and a very light touch of dried red fruit. Palate showed some rusticity, with damp earth, spices and cherry undertones. Palate shows quality here with elegance and depth that culminates in a really balanced mouthfeel. Well, if it smells like chambolle, tastes earthy and rustic yet has balance and elegance, it is Mugnier Marechale. Very stoked that to have called Mugnier from the get go.

  • 2004 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Very generously shared by ST. Identifiable chambolle on the nose with high toned red fruit concentration, crushed violets and velvety layers of red fruit yet also broody and darker in profile - when it was revealed to be Les Cras, it all made sense. While it had all the hallmarks of a great chambolle, I don't think this escaped the greenness of 04 but it was not quite overbearing as I'd imagined. There is noticeable capsicum, angelica root, peat and unriped vegetables in the background yet it does not overtake the fruit. Finish had good length as well as a sense of elegance.

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Pop and poured into decanter for 15 mins before serving. Flamboyant bouquet with iron, violets, roses and macerated plums with persistent fruit concentration on the palate along with dried leaves, blood orange, dried roses and gevrey spice. While plenty of fruit, this was slightly lean and thin on the palate although it culminated in a regal fashioned finish with plenty of length and fruit concentration. Truly, Rousseau's Clos st Jacques are a special bunch.
