A tasting of the 2020 cru barolos from Paolo Scavino with their Export Director, Roberto Boggione.
Overall, the wines were really strong. They were far more open than I was expecting. The Ambrogio was probably the biggest surprise for me in the lineup (in a good way), with the Ravera being the most disappointing.
Prapo, Bric del Fiasc and Monvigliero all showed incredibly well.
2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo 90 Points

Much more accessible than anticipated. Fresh and fruit-forward. A bit lean and I anticipate that if I tasted this blind, I would think this is a very well-valued langhe nebbiolo.

2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
The nose was closed but the palate was deep, rich and generous. This wine takes over your entire palate with velvety tannins. Really great and for me, was the surprise of the 2020 Paolo Scavino lineup.

2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
To me, this is the wine that always brings me back to this producer. Expressive, floral and peppery. It has character and refinement. Would be happy to have some of these in the cellar.

2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 89 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
There was an almost green pepper -like note that I was picking up. I wasn't as excited about this upon tasting it as I had been in previous years.

2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo Prapò 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92+ - This was just lovely. The big boy of the lineup so to speak. Serralunga all day with a darker more savoury edge to this barolo. Really great.

2020 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc 93 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Beautiful wine. Almost like a more well-rounded iteration of the Monvigliero this year with quite a bit more complexity. So good!

2016 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
This was a rather nice wine, however, when you factor in the price ($560 CAD), there are just so many other baroli I would buy before this.
If i had one critique, it would be that it was just a touch hot on the palate.
