Introduction

A get together focused on Specific vintages of 1980's and 1990 Bordeaux wine.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1985 Château La Lagune 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Sight: Opaque, slightly cloudy, surprising color for a 1985. Little or no bricking. Pretty impressive.

Nose: Cedar wood notes accompanied by saddle and granny smith apple. Pencil shavings. Minuscule hints of cat pee.

Taste: Slightly hollow. Mid palate was empty-ish. Perhaps a little bit off?

Overall: Acceptable; maybe past its prime or just not that great of a vintage??? 86 Points.

  • 1983 Château Palmer 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Sight: Still looks like a young wine. Clear and medium to medium dark red. Some purple tinges. High viscosity wine. Wow - this is a 1983 being drunk in 2008 and it has no bricking! Wow!

Nose: Sweet fruit. Minor heat. Red currants well integrated with woodsynotes. Some herbal aspects as well. Riding along was some saddle notes as well (but not much). Floral roses were wonderful and some stewed fruits stood off to the side in the background.

Taste: Soft, smoothm and integrated. Minor heat. Slightly soft on the mid-palate. However it's well integrated and a very sensual wine experience.

    Overall: A fine+ wine. 92 Points.

  • 1985 Château Cos d'Estournel 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Sight: Young looking wine - no bricking going on. Clear dark red wine of high viscosity.

Nose: Saddle and spice notes came to mind first. Then waves of fruit and floral layered in a seductive approach. Anise and allspice made an appearance as well. I was amazed at how a nose could appear layered and complex. Really beautiful. Later on discerned some poblano pepper notes along with some earthy pings and mushroom notes.

Taste: Spice component on the tonsils; well integrated tannin (however the tannins are still hanging on so it shows more room for aging). Lot's of toasty oak vanillins. Just a great and impressive wine.

    Overall: Outstanding - 94 Points.

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted for about 4 hours at home prior to travel to tasting event. This was consumed from a Schott Zwiesel Bordeaux Glass.

Sight: Dark red color; clear wine; medium viscosity; still young in appearance (youthful and no bricking on the rim)

Smell: Cedar box; tobacco; Dark cherry notes; Earthy components; Florals started to come out after a while - roses; Toasted vanillins; pencil shavings; red plums and red fruit aspect in general

Taste: Smooth; Chocolate; Espresso; Cranberry; Pomegranite

Overall impression: OUTSTANDING! With a few minutes in the glass, there were flowers all over the nose, but surprisingly this is still young. Parker really nailed this if you look at his notes. When I did I said "yeah, that what I meant" LOL This is 95+ points

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Sight: Young in appearance. Clear wine with dark red fruits. Not as dark as the 1989 lynch bages. High viscosity.

Nose: Fruit - bush fruits including blueberries, cassis, currants. Toasted oak vanillins doing the high step as well here followed by an amazing blueberry jam/pie filling that was just calling. Aged cedar and the faintest hint of worchestershire.

Taste: Very very nice assemblage! Tannins and acid well in check and well orchestrated. Tannins were slightly relaxed. Great attack, mid palate and finish!

Overall: Outstanding. Not necessarily young though on the palate. IMO the other wines this evening possess more aging ability. 95 points.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Sight: Medium red wine that has been clarified. Medium viscosity (more viscous than some of the earlier wines). Overall a young in appearance wine noticeable mostly throught he absence in bricking.

Nose: Cedar and leather come front and center initially. Then giving way oak and red tree fruits of both medium and dark colors. Hazelnuts made a pass at me while the overall bouquet was just shining and bragging in its own right due to the complex and multi-layered nature of the wine.

Tatse: Really excellent! Smooth and integrated.

Overall: An outstanding- wine. 93-94 Points.

  • 1986 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Sight: Medium dark red wine; clear and high viscosity.

Nose: Florals! Roasted nuts made an appearance along with toasted oak vanillins; Cedar box notes along with an odd one - Tahini Paste (liked it, just never smelled it on a wine before). Other minor sweet notes and a little bit of leather. Some overripe fruit notes as well.

Taste: Peppery and vegetal. Still young and lots of grip.

Overall: An outstinding- wine. 94 points. Would like to spend more time with this wine.

  • 1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Sight: Another young looking wine. Clear and medium viscosity. Dark red in color.

Nose: Reminds me of ying and yang. Why? It screams integration. Soft cherry notes dancing with florals and cedar. Oak and vanillins holding up the back end. Smidgen of anise.

Taste: Balanced is the first thing that comes to mind. Hint of toothpaste on the attack? Bust just a smooth balanced and wonderfully integrated wine that has all the cylinders firing on the Attack, Mid-Palate, and Finish.

Overall: Of the 3 points (Attack, Mid-Palate, and Finish) Mid Palate was the weakest of the 3. However, still a super elegant wine. 92 points.

The lynch bages caught my attention this evening the most. Loved it!
