  Initial soft(ish). Gooseberry later carries through to palate.

• 2006 Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve 92 Points

  South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

  Lean butter and some oak, hints of orange finish on the nose. Palate has wonderful balance, more mineral and structured which carried through the evening.

  Little smoke, muted chocolate, little green. Palate is quite bracing. Tightened and stringent later.

This was a great match - with basically a bbq sausage and the 1998 was fantastic

  A little cedar/pencil, some baked blackberry and apple. Seductive balance, fine tannins, lovely finish. Some soft fine leather.

• 2004 Vergelegen Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

  More primary fruit, slightly lean blackcurrant, a hint of greenness which doesn't carry to the palate, later some vanilla. The palate has just enough plushness to carry it through. Finish is a little metallic.

  Dark chocolate, light cinnamon spice, coffee. Palate is quite tannic, a little coarse. Meat notes and a rough gravelly finish.

A great evening and the 1998 Cab was easily the WOTN. Fantastic
