A tasting of three top producers. Three neigbouring "crus" from Luigi Pira showing great examples of terroir. (Oops, wrong date on all notes... Should've been 2008-11-24.)
Dense, closed, complex nose of dark fruit, flowers, violets. Almost chockingly high acidity, very powerful tannins and very high alcohol. Excellent and despite its power elegant with lots of similarities with more powerful Burgundies. Definitely not a wine to open in the next 5-8 years.
Open, sweet fruit with red berries, violets, cherries, raspberry licorice, lingonberries. High acidity, elegant, good balance. Lots of tannins. Wonderful wine.
Bit closed, dark berries, a bit "dusty" , sloe (slånbär!), cranberry. Concentrated, full body. Medium-high acidity, felt "soft" in comparison with other wines in the flight. Great wine.
Surprise - this would easily pass as a dark horse in a Cd9 tasting. Red fruit, stables, earth notes, spices & herbs, some smoke, tar, nail-polish, violets. Tolerable tannins, elegant with high acitidy and a light bitterness at the end. Good length. Drinkable now if you have to.
Open smell of sweet fruit and red berries - cherry? Taste of lingonberries, licorice, high in alcohol. Despite its youth a very drinkable and enjoyable Barolo that really opened up in the glass.
Attractive, balanced dark nose of raspberries, cranberries and blueberries. Balanced taste with lingonberries and cranberries. "Tonic-like" bitterness and quite harsh right now. Somewhat hollow taste in the last 60-80%.
