Introduction

I got together with Mark S. from the board and some friends from work. We shared some Bordeaux and a nice evening in JC. This evening is a definite signal to my palate shifting. These wines were really nice. I'm not sure I would have said that a year ago. The Mouton and Monbousquet were pop and pour. The others double decanted this morning around 6 am. While I'll claim WOTN honors for the Pavie, my preference was the Leoville Poyferre. I felt like it was ready to go tonight and had the most interest on the nose and palate. A fun night.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Kistler Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard Parmelee-Hill

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

This was typical chardonnay to me, although more restrained. Not as big or buttery as some of the cheaper stuff. Definitely more elegant than that.

  • 2003 Château Monbousquet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This was nice. I liked it. The nose promised a bigger wine than the palate delivered, but still nice. Dark sweet fruit on the nose and a some integrated oak with dark fruit on the palate. Soft and nice.

  • 1998 Château Pavie Macquin

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Another Cheryl WOTN. Pepper on the nose and slightly sharp out of the bottle. With time in the glass, soft finish and well-structured. Probably had the advantage of being older than the other wines, but for tonight, it was the better drinking wine.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Really nice nose and palete. Long finish, but some guessed possibly closed? Dark fruit, not as sweet as Monbousquet. Very nice.

  • 2003 Château Mouton Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This was too early, closed. There was some freshness on the nose that wasn't as cherried or as dark as the others, but nice. Would really like to have this tomorrow... or in 10 years.
