Introduction

6 wines were on offer, only notes for 4 here - the other two were Domaine des Tourelles 2006 Rose and a Louis Latour 2008 Moulin-a-Vent, but I didn't take notes on those two. The former tasted like red wine and the latter was somewhat disappointing.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Fresher, less bready than many Champagnes on the nose, more zesty, with a mineral water aspect and touch of milk bottle sweets. Very good acid on the palate, green apple, slightly yeasty but not much. A fine Champagne and though I prefer the fatter, richer style to this, this is very refreshing and a great summer wine.

  • 2006 Rockburn Riesling Parkburn 86 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Alsatian in style, not as dry as the Aussies or many of the New Zealand efforts either. Loaded with lime and minerals but also with a little creaminess on the palate. Good but not exceptional.

  • 1999 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

This has received quite a bit of flak in the notes below but I had a great experience with this recently. After almost a decade in bottle petrol is starting to come through on the nose but not very strongly. The thing that strikes me most about this wine is an incredibly intense vanilla ice cream component on the nose and palate, which I love. Otherwise, this is fat and nicely layered, slightly drying on the sides of the mouth - my only complaint, and it's quite a big one, is that I'd like some more acid here. However, still an excellent effort.

  • 2007 Pio Cesare Moscato d'Asti 80 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti

Not what I'm used to (nor what I like from) Moscato d'Asti. None of the beautiful white peach I so love from these wines; this one is all candy and somewhat cloying. That said, it was incredibly popular with many others at the party.
