Introduction

shane's brother was in town, so a couple of us gathered at his place to pop open some wines and just kick back and relax on a nice summer night

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Giachino Vin de Savoie Abymes 87 Points

France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie Abymes

nose: nice and crisp nose that makes perfect as the starter with nice tones of lemon peel, sweet citrus fruits, bits of passion fruit and a touch of minerality

taste: excellent light feel with some nice frizzante to it along with tones of sweet apples, lemon peels, sweet citrus', and some mineral tones. Very fresh on teh palate that also works as a palate cleanser

overall: a nice starter white. Perfect for the summer or just to have around for guests. Doesn't have that much depth, but it does exactly what its trying to do and is a good quaffer

  • 2007 Georges Roblin et Fils Sancerre Château de Maimbray 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

nose: nice and crisp nose of wet rocks, seashells, and tart tones of citrus'. Good balance and very much sancerre, though a little exotic on the citrus tones as they are slightly on the tropical side

taste: good medium+ acidity and a good light feel with tropical citrus tones, seashells, and various bits of lemon and lime peels

overall: a real nice sancerre. Another enjoyable starter while everything else got going around and worked well in the social situation

  • 2001 Casanova di Neri Pietradonice 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

nose: extremely deep and complex with rich and bold tones of black cherries, black currants, all sorts of dark spices, black berries, and with more air hints of dark florals emerge along with tones of crushed berries. Very well balanced and has a real nice richness to it, but is far from over the top and has that tuscan sense to it

taste: great full body to the wine with good tannins and tones of herbs, crushed berries, hints of dark florals, black cherries, and black currarnts. Good tannins with great depth too, that give some grip, but are starting to pull back a bit

overall: I had decanted this for about 3-4 hours before taking it to leatherpalate's place. It needed it from my memory almost two years ago, and it showed great. Can certainly develop further and I wish I had more of a chance with this wine, but it was a more social atmosphere with a few non-winos, so I wasn't able to get a full revisit on this like I would normally. Still shows lots of potential right now and I'm glad I have several more bottles

  • 2001 Stefano Farina Barolo 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

nose: lovely nose of dark red cherries, hints of leather, various spices tones, sour berries, and a good dose of herbs. Very nice depth and the aromas were well balanced

taste: very sneaky tannins and medium+ acidity with tones of dark chocolate, dark cherries, leather, herbs, and sour berries

overall: this was blind and confused the hell out of me. Was drunk on a rooftop at night, so it was hard to see its color much, but this came across a bit as a aged south american can at the time

  • 1981 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: well worn nose, but still alive with tones of anise seed, black tea, some dark red cherries and tones of green pepper. Had a past its prime sense to it, but was certainly not dead, its just seen better days

taste: good medium body with tones of anise seed, black tea, and green peppers. A bit thin on the mid-palate and the finish was clipped a bit as it also lacked a bit of depth that the nose seemed to have

overall: a nice wine for what it was. My friend had gotten this for a good price, so its always fun to get this kind of experience as it is past its prime, but by no means is dead

  • 1999 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Arcus Estate 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

nose: this was unmistakeably oregonian pinot on the nose with well balanced tones of plums, dark red cherries, spice tones and hints of char smoke. Good depth and very expressive with a real nice touch of robust elegance to it

taste: while there is a bit of a robustness to it on the nose, it gives way to a more lovely feel that still retains the elegance with pretty tones of purple florals, plums, dark red cherries and hints of various spice tones

overall: a real pretty and mature wine. While some 99 oregon pinots that I've had could be somewhat confused with burgundy, what I like about this is that it certainly is from oregon, but has a real class and elegance to it that makes it very attractive

  • 2004 Tensley Syrah Tierra Alta Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

nose: nice and rich nose that has a forwardness to it, but retains a good balance with rich tones of red and black fruits, smokey tones, dark red cherries and dark tones of berries. Good depth, and the slight bit of age has seemed to smooth out the nose as I'm used to tensley syrah's being big fruity and jammy, this wasn't like that on the nose

taste: very full bodied that is chock full of black currants, red and black fruits, dark red cherries and a good amount of dark berries. Good supporting tannins to go with the rich and balanced flavors

overall: a nice change of pace from previous Tensley bottles that I've had. This has tamed down a bit, but still retained that big fruit quality that is a hallmark of central coast syrah and from Joey Tensley. Comes across as in a perfect drinking stage currently as everything is well in balanced and holds true to what Joey Tensley does

  • 2005 Davis Family Vineyards Syrah Guyzer Block Russian River Valley 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

nose: excellent depth with a nice peppery nose along with tones of dark herbs, red and black fruits, with some real good tones of dark berries to accompany it. Well balanced, but with a richer quality that shows that its more new world, but not overtly fruity

taste: real good and silky tannins with a rich full bodied feel. Black pepper, herbs, some black currants, red and black fruits with a touch of smoke on the back end. This is full bodied without overtaking you on the palate

overall: a quality syrah. The fruit showed a more new world side to it, but it had a good coolness to it at the same time. Well balanced with a nice peppery streak to it

  • 2000 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cépages 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

nose: very silky and smooth nose of dark chocolate, black spices, dark red cherries, herbs, and a good amount of cranberries. Really nice depth with a good amount of class on the nose to boot

taste: lovely medium/full feel with great balance and tones of dark chocolate, black spices, dark red cherries and bits of herbs. Relatively well resolved tannins with good depth and class on the palate too

overall: drinking great. This is a Cinq Cepages that is drinking great right now and has a good amount of elegance to it that makes it really attractive. Fully enjoyable from opening all the way to the last pour

  • 2002 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Clark & Telephone Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

nose: good dark and pungent nose. Not brooding but somewhat mysterious with tones of raspberries, cola, dark red cherries, violets, spice tones and fresh picked berries. Very expressive and well balanced

taste: really good medium/full body with tones of creamed strawberries, cola, dark raspberries, bits of violets and tones of dark red cherries. The tones are very well balanced with a real delicious quality to them

overall: a real pretty cali pinot that is drinking perfectly. I like how the dark fruits bring more of a mysterious quality then brooding and there is a real polish on the palate. Very tasty and a real fun pinot right now

  • 2005 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Shea Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

nose: nice and fresh nose filled with berries, red cherries, spice tones, and a good bit of purple florals. Well balanced with showing some tasty fruit on the nose and good depth. Still very primary and a slight bit tight at first, but for a pop n pour, this was showing fairly well after sitting in the glass for a little bit

taste: silky and polished medium feel with good medium acidity and tones of fresh picked berries, bits of plum and red berries, along with some nice tones of spices and purple florals

overall: I had been told that this was a pop n pour. It showed very well at this stage for being like that, though it did need a bit of coaxing in the glass. Very well balanced tones that are very tasty, but has a coolness about it that I like from the 05 vintage. Could use a little more time as it is the same as it ever was(which isn't a bad thing), so one can pop this without much fear, but at the same time, if you like your pinot more developed, then holding for another 18 months-2 years should do the trick

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Nose: young and a bit on the tight side as one would expect, but very lovely and feminine with lush tones of white and black pepper, bacon fat, a good amount of black cherries and lovely tones of mineral rich earth. Very well balanced, and while not neccessarily a knockout nose, this is one that snares you in a bit

taste: plush and young with good tannins along with a medium/full feel and medium+ acidity. Well balanced and nuanced tones of white and black pepper, some bits of purprle florals, potpurri, bacon fat, and black cherries

overall: a real sexy young cote rotie. This was decanted for about 2 hours before bringing it to dinner and was then one of the last wine drank that night and it was still a bit tight. Could use another two or so years to fully round out, and is a cote rotie more for pondering
