France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Light color. Brambly nose with licorice. Crisp, high acid, pretty tightly structured although it has a hint of sap. Better than last time, but still not to my taste.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Light and redder in color than the Ponsot. Very fragrant and more red fruits. More pleasing texture and feel-more airy and less bound up while still retaining good acidity. Some licorice here too. Good.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Medium ruby center, translucent. Alluring aromatics of spice, clove, and a touch of stemminess. Lovely medium weight, licorice and blackberry, beautiful fruit/acid balance, and great length even now. This is what I think of when I think "Vosne". Outstanding, and the finest wine of the group (although not the biggest) in its precision and balance. Hard to call a $150 wine a sleeper, but relatively speaking, this was the outperformer compared to the more expensive Rougets.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Medium ruby core, lighter edges. Greener, cooler impression than the Beauxmonts. Similar weight in the mouth with real expansion of flavor, but the tannins are much grippier, resulting in a harsher feel. Whether it has closed down or is just built for the future, no question that the "lesser" Beauxmonts is the more enjoyable drink today.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Beautifully deep color but transparent. All chocolate and torrefaction on the nose. Lusher, deeper, rounder, and a tad more sweet than the rest of the wines with a nice underpinning of acidity-biggest wine without question. Gentle black fruit without any tartness. Potentially outstanding, although I prefer the Beauxmonts for its balance, spice, and detail.

Apparently from a different parcel than the "normale" but still vinified by Rouget. Similar deep color. Bitter chocolate also come through on the nose, but perhaps some wood as well. More backward and tannin with sterner black fruit than the other cuvee, which I preferred to this rendition.
