Boka

Introduction

I would say an average IWFS dinner for Boka. Room was overcrowded as usual even though I tried to tell everyone that it was too many people which is a bit frustrating. Food was hit or miss, wines showed pretty well.

Flight 1 - Passed Canapes (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Marinated Big Eye Tuna - Wasabi-edamame puree, dashi gelee, grapefruit, spicy quail egg (1 Note)

Very nice dish - probably best of the night. Interesting and complex with good ingredients.

Flight 3 - Lake Trout - Escargot tortellini, roasted tomato, eggplant, fiddlehead fern, green olive, pine nut puree (1 Note)

Nice but didn't love the olive note. Could have used a heavier fish to match with the red burg.

Flight 4 - Angus Beef Tenderloin and Shortrib - sweet potato puree, red cabbage, salsify (1 Note)

Yawn - just OK.

Flight 5 - Crave Brothers Farmstead "Les Freres" - speck, quince paste, fruit and nut bread (1 Note)

Surprisingly nice cheese course - the bit of speck added some nice saltiness

  • 1994 Ridge Monte Bello 94 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

First bottle I tried was somehow weirdly off with woody oaky spearmint character. Second bottle was much better. Full soft deep red color. Full red fruit (still a slight canned note). Nice soft red fruit on the palate with good enery and complexity. 93-94 pts.

Flight 6 - Apricot Frangipan Tart - almond ice cream, dark chocolate cremeaux, port roasted mission figs (1 Note)

Nothing special, though the chocolate was nice.
