Asia Grand

Introduction

A simple dim sum brunch organised specially for JP and Pat with a theme of bringing a "nice" fren but ABB (Anything BUT burgundies). Was supposed to showcase the best of new world wines at the same time how nicely asian food pairs with wines. A very good showing of wines and interesting observations made by everyone on the table.

Flight 1 - Champagne v Champagne (2 Notes)

As good as 02 is as a vintage, Jacquesson was the more enjoyable for me for the two or rather as Pat puts it...more romantic.

Flight 2 - Clare Valley Rieslings (2 Notes)

Two of the top rieslings from this region.

Complex aromas. Octane-98 petrol comes through. Very mineral, very bone dry with chalky lime, more minerality . Admirable length , sense of intensity, cleanliness and character.

  • 2008 Pikes Riesling Traditionale 82 Points

Lifted gaarden flowers, white jasmines and octane 95 fuel. Slightly riper on the palate than the Grosset but still showing typical chalky lime and minerality. Simpler to enjoy.

Flight 3 - The Sole Chardonnay (1 Note)

  • 2003 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 82 Points

Deep yellow. Lots of coconut oil on the nose! It smells like banana boat tanning oil. Lots of oak, delicious as it may be but not judiciously used. But it does show lots of character. Undeniably new world and a bit like one of those cultish napa chards. Fat, rich buttery and almost over indulgent. Sweet ripe fruits. I was somewhat dissapointed given its standing as one of the top chards of the new world.
Re-tasted on the next day: Less but still obvious new oak with more noticeable lemon fruits now. Still very butterscotch and creamy. Falling flat quite quickly on the palate. This was not meant to be an ager. Lots of cosmetic work probably neccessary due to the heat of the vintage. Acidity is waning and does not balance out enough. It is quite delicious golden apples and most new world drinkers will fall head over heels with this but all said.. this probably was a difficult vintage to make.

Flight 4 - ABB reds (2 Notes)

Flight 5 - Sweeties (2 Notes)

I can't believe it but i thought the appallingly affordable brown brothers outshone the Fritz, which was kinda boring but all natural.

This is like a cocktail by the poolside with pineapple juice as the base , throw in bits of mango, assortment of ripe tropical fruits, christmas spices and cocktail umbrella. Very approachable bikini clad babe by the pool that will respond to shallow banter. As artificial and un-wine like this is, I actually did enjoy it! on a hot sunny day after a filling dim sum lunch. Its really like one of those very good looking, slightly bimbotic gals that everyone wants to talk to but without their frens knowing they did just in case of being branded a shallow hal.

  • 2003 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 82 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Spiced nose though also alc lifted. White indian flower and sun dried pineapples.A bit fat and I would have appreciated more acidity but the vintage was probably more adept at making delicous now drinking wines. Still , this is a crowd pleaser though not the best example from this famous producer.
