Introduction

I was really looking forward to this lunch, I had carefully chosen the las cases 94 and 88 for a mini (micro) vertical, with some good food (rable de lièvre, nature) in a nice restaurant. The wines delivered, and that made the lunch really special. Both wines were unmistakenly las cases, and both wines showed undeniable class. It really is a first growth wine even if it is not mentioned on the label. Both wines were decanted and served at the same time. I never had the chance to taste more than one vintage of las cases at the same occasion, and this experience really revealed more of the extraordinary terroir of LLC than a single vintage tasting (even a more spectacular vintage) could ever do.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss Riesling Wiebelsberg La Dame

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Honey on the nose, grapefruit en bouche; nice and broad wine, but nothing to rave about.

  • 1994 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This was an amazing bottle of Las Cases. 1994 an off vintage? This wine makes you want to doubt this. Power, elegance, the lead pencil and tobacco notes, with the right amount of fruit acidity and tannins. A plus 30 seconds finish, that lingers on for minutes. This screams 1st growth quality from start to finish. Yes there are better vintages of Las Cases, but this bottle was a beauty on its own and an absolute bargain at 60 EUR.

  • 1988 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This wine is peaking or maybe peaked a year or two ago. still vibrant and fresh. Whatever people may say about bordeaux (overpriced, overhyped, over...), Las Cases has produced masterpieces the last couple of decades, that can only be rivaled by the best winemakers around the globe. The elegance, relative power, and balance of this wine is extraordinary, considering the vintage. I wish I had more of this (certainly at the price paid at that time). Although this was extraordinary the 1994 Las Cases drank side by side impressed me more, although other people at the table preferred this (more tertiary 1988.
