Introduction

We had a few friends over for dinner consisting of salmon tartar with sweet red onion creme fraiche (appetizer), Pecorino toscano with roasted sweet peppers and arugula coulis (first course) , roasted guinea fowl en crepinette de byaldi with pan jus (entree) and finished off with a simple lemon sabayon pine nut tart with honeyed mascarpone cream. My wife is getting really good with Thomas Keller recipes. Lucky me:)

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1999 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Quite decent showing with biscuits and yeast flavors and some degree of depth and complexity. Lacks the focus, concentration and delineation of a top notch bubbly.

  • 2005 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Grassy with lemon notes; good cutting acidity and minerality. The Arugula salad accentuated the red pepper notes. Overall rather restrained and not quite as expressive as I had hoped for.

  • 1983 Château Brane-Cantenac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Restrained on the nose, quite elegant with some finesse. A little short on the depth and finish. A good mature claret though.

  • 1996 Château L'Evangile 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This is an underrated wine in my view; its perfumed, with dark chocolate notes and a very attractive caressing density. Good finish too.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Barton 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Not quite as a expressive as the last bottle I had a couple of years ago; nevertheless, its showed great balance, finesse and a good deal of ripeness, not at all exaggerated. It only hinted at the stuffing I know it has. I think this is shutting down afterall. It was double decanted and audozed for 10 hours.

Closing

These wines showed the balance and finesse from my favorite regions of Bordeaux- at affordable prices too. Very enjoyable indeed.
