I just turned on a new 'channel' containing ~1800 wine reviews from Lyle Fass, the author of http://rockssandfruit.blogspot.com/

Lyle is a up and coming stud in the wine industry with strong opinions and a strong palate. He has ruffled his share of feathers in an already short career, but you just have to share a wine with him, try a recommendation of his or just read his writing to understand that he is a man who is passionate about wine. Of course, not everyone will agree with his reviews, but they ALWAYS make for an interesting read! Anyway, effective immediately, I have turned on these reviews. Just look down in the professional reviews for each wine, or in the MY CELLAR view sort by LF to bring your wines to the top which have been reviewed by Lyle.

You can see the full list of channels here: http://www.cellartracker.com/getcontent.asp

I've been looking at some of the wines he reviews in Cellartracker - but it doesn't seem to get through the system. Take Leon Beyer Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive 2000 - He reviews the wine on his blog, but there's no review on CT's page about this wine.

Nwinther,

That is because I send Eric a database of notes once a month and he uploads them. That is why no Beyer yet.

How can we see a list of wines he's reviewed?  I apparently don't have any in my cellar, but I'm always looking for new juice to try.

Dear All,

Hit the blog. Not impressed. I enjoy strong opinions; however, I find ranting and raving (no matter how justified the dissatisfaction) sort of tedious, much like a child or adolescent who feels the need to call attention to him or herself by shouting or acting out in some other way. Admittedly, it may seem sort of cute or interesting in the short run, but eventually, it becomes tiresome.

Why the opinions of this blogger and not those of one of the countless others? Why any at all? If I want his opinions, I know where I can find them.

Cheers
John

Eric,

First of all thanks for more reviews.

Is there any way to re-order the order in which the subscription reviews are displayed?  No offense to Lyle, Garyv or Robert Parker but I really want to view Tanzer's reviews first.  For instance in 1999 Margaux I see Rockss and Fruit and Gary Vaynerchuk reviews first.  As you add content we should be able to selectively block and/or re-order the content channels.

In addition and as an example FYI there are duplicate Rockss and Fruit reviews in the Selosse Substance section taking up a lot of real estate.

Thanks.

Well, it's my site, I respect Lyle's palate (especially when he is writing about the wines he likes), and that is enough for me...

Seriously, I know not everyone will appreciate every channel. These channels are not a new development--I announced them rather broadly last October: http://www.cellartracker.com/newsletter/10-31-2007.htm
This is just the latest installment. The feedback is appreciated, although the tone is, well, a bit strong...

To respond to the other feedback, I will be looking into the following::
  • Letting a user disable a specific channel.
  • Perhaps alternate sorts. Right now it is sorted by date. I don't know that I would necessarily open up a full-blown interface to let you sort in a totally open way--but at least to pull the 'professional' sources like Tanzer above the 'blog' sources.
There will be more channels both from 'blog' type sources and from some heavyweight professional reviewers. And no, Parker and Spectator are not among the latter. They would prefer that CellarTracker fall off the face of the planet and are usually quite happy to let me know so. Of course, if you are a mutual customer you can let them know how you feel. FWIW, if any review source (Parker, Spectator, BurgHound) *wanted* their content here such that it was only availalable to people who pay them, well that just takes a few days of work (really just a few hours of coding and then a lot of mapping depending on the size of the database to integrate). However, despite the nearly 50,000 users here they seem to prefer to go their own way. So be it. My door is always open. I have been in touch with each many, many times...

Eric,
Thanks for looking into these options.  More in-depth content is all good but I'm greedy about my page view real estate.   And I'm a huge Tanzer fan...

BTW, Selosse Substance dupe has been removed: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=59830

Please note that Lyle does have 3 separate reviews of this wine.

Dear Eric,

I thought that the tone would capture the gist of what makes the blog attractive.  It doesn't rile me all that much to have the comments there. I am adult enough to pick and choose.

On another matter, I am quite certain that the forces-that-be don't care for you all that much. Hence, I subscribe and recommend CT to all of my wine drinking friends. Who knows, maybe I will come to appreciate bombast?

Cheers,

John

John, thanks for your understanding. Lyle moves between poetry and battery acid pretty quickly depending upon his views on a wine... Anyway, I will let you know when I add the option to suppress. But like any acquired taste you might perhaps choose to retain Lyle...

I also want/need to add better filtering and UI options around all of these channels so that people can search/view the notes independently. Except Tanzer. They do not want the browsing experience here to be better than on their own site, so they intentionally haev me restrict the filtering options. That said, Steve is great to work with and shows a lot of vision being so open to integrating with a site like CellarTracker (and others). He should be applauded.

John,

Sorry to hear you don't like my blog, wine reviews or insights which is cool. I hope Eric has a channel blocker so you can tune me out. If you give me a chance I am not that horrible a person. To each his own. Cheers.

Lyle,

As I mentioned, I am not averise to strong opinion. To the contrary, I enjoy it, and I enjoy exchanging strong opinion. My concern is with the level of discourse -- a fancy term for how intelligent the exchange is. You seem like a smart guy; it just seems to me that you are trying to attract attention with your style, when it is the substance of your ideas that truly matters. I realize that this is a marketplace and there is no such thing as bad publicity, but your syle overshadows your substance. Perhaps this is the wave of the future -- we now have all sorts of people yelling at us on TV about all sorts of things. And it may very well be that how something is said has become moe imortant than what is said. Nevertheless, for me, the world of ideas is most important, and regardless of the life domain, I prefer to engage the world in that way and encourage others to do the same. Otherwise, it becomes a big shouting match in which the loudest voice prevails. I can be very loud, but I prefer other modes.

I will not tune you out -- I am sufficiently curious to listen. I just hope I do not have to sift through too much irrelevant invective to understand what you have to say.

Cheers,

John

I respect your take and I believe the only true freedom that each individual has in this world is to voice their opinion without the regulation or preference of others. It is in that way I choose to write and live my life. Some people cannot take it and I do divide people, which I will be the first to admit, but the ideas and discourse are what drives me. My style is passionate and somewhat aggressive and it will not change but only evolve. That is my essence and my voice and what, in my mind, has driven me to somewhat mild success in the wine field and happinesss in life. A lot of people play it straight down the middle and are afraid to take a position which does not really contribute to pushing the envelope or moving ideas farther along. I beleive in some, not all cases, style plays a nice complement to substance. Hopefully you'll give me chance and see what I have to say.

Can't find any reviews yet, but I did hit Lyle's blog.  So far he's got my attention since he's a Riesling fan.  I'd take a quality Riesling over a fabulous Chardonnay any day.  Eric, thanks for adding this to the site.

Don't think this was answered from earlier, can we format a search of just his reviews?

I have not added UI for different sorting options, but I have changed the sort order. Now the "paid" channels (Tanzer's IWC and Roy Hersh's For The Love of Port) will always sort ahead of the "free" channels (currently Bill Nanson's Burgundy-Report, Gary Vaynerchuk's WineLibrary TV and Lyle Fass' Rockss and Fruit). Then things are sorted by publication name and finally review date (most recent first). Before the publications were all moshed together since I just sorted by review date. If people really whine I can expose an option, but for now I think this is a better default sort.

I have also now added per-user suppression options for the free channels. Just go to the subscription management page and use the checkbox next to a channel (you have to do this and press UPDATE for each channel, one at a time). http://www.cellartracker.com/getcontent.asp
