Based on potential as it is only now entering the drinking window...prime years yet to come. Solid, classic Leoville Barton. Glad I own 2 cases of this!

93-94. In its drinking window showing fruit and some tertiary elements seem to creep in. Read Englishman Claret’s note.

out of a half bottle.... pretty flat, I would imagine a 750ml or large format would be in a better place right now. On the nose it's pretty classic but the mid palate and finish and underwhelming.

After 1 1/2 hours in carafe, wine began showing very nice complex and rich bouquet. Eucalyptus, dark fruit and tar. On the palate, very smooth, tannins have disappeared. Medium-bodied with pleasant deep fruit flavors. This wine had more punch than the 2000. Overall, the wine delivered the desired level of Left-Bank complexity.

- Opened in the morning at 10 but didn't decant until the first sip at 3 pm and it was not great on first taste - no fruit, tucked away bitterness and quite a bit of noticeable acidity;

- Should have listened to others that said to decant in the morning

- 2h in the decanter with occasional swings so far and will amend post as time progresses and it's slowly starting to open up; pronounced acidity has faded, fruit is coming out

-

Can drink now but really open in the morning for evening consumption; would probably not touch for a while though

After opening in the glass for about 30 minutes, its expression began to show. An inky dark color. Hints of licorice. Very well made and has several years to go. Great with the seasonal pork chop we had.

Cassis and a dark earthy component, aromatically this was starting to open, leading to a good depth and complexity, while maintaining a clean and streamlined feel all in good balance.

garnet, in color. earth, dark fruit, clove, cinnamon, oak, on the nose. blackberry, dark cherry, cinnamon, clove, oak, on the palate. medium plus acid, medium plus tannins, on a dry finish. needs 10-15 years to mature.

Muscular plenty of gritty tannins but lots of fruit and espresso behind it. Massively young needs years and decades perhaps. This Leo Barton appears far younger than the 2009 which has much rounder tannins and complex fruit. My best tasting experiences with these wines have been after they age about 10yrs or so. 92-95

Mid Jul 2017: purple ink; dark and red fruit compote, especially cassis, blackberry and cherry plus vanilla, mint, some cigarbox and a hint of milk coffee; medium/full body; fleshy, angular texture; lots of tannins; long finish.

Tasted together with a 2003 Montrose (see tasting note) the 2005 LB, while outstanding lacked the noblesse and smoothness of the former.

The 2005 LB performed today already at an outstanding level but hasn't reached it's preferred drinking window yet. Now in his teenage years this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring.
If the tannins melt down and a little more aroma/flavor complexity can be gained there's a good chance that he can add 2-3 points on the rating scale.

Wet earth and graphite on the early nose. First hour in the decanter saw the tannins soften and the finish lengthen . 2nd-3rd hours revealed additional nose of milk chocolate, bright berry, with a cassis and dark fruit finish, which began to significantly lengthen. Paired with tenderloin , grilled asparagus and my wife’s fabulous einkorn bread. 96 points at this moment. We are lucky people

My preference is for the 2004 right now, but that I think just points to how great the 2005 vintage is. Very fierce tannins. A little bit more perfumed off of the cork pull then the 2004 though. Hmm... Very tight. Give it at least five more years is my thinking.

Has been cellared at 58F, brought to room temperature, decanted for three hours before drinking, drank over three days. Pronounced aroma of black fruit, tar and charred wood. On day one the black fruit, earth, tar and some stone; the stone was subtle, pleasing, but fleeting - gone by day 2. A touch of barnyard, tannin very soft, medium acidity midway and a shortish finish. Overall, surprisingly elegant, medium-low intensity, lacked nuance, hence the 92. Poor QPR at today's price, if this bottle was a good representation.

Berry Brothers 2018 Bordeaux en primeur (plus back vintages) (Lindley Hall, London): You know I sort of had given up on this estate a little bit as I found a lack of drink-ability problematic. However I must report I had a recent good experience with 03 and very good experience with 90. So onto the 2005 - which was served alongside other chateaux 09s mainly. Clearly totally different vintage style becoming apparent. This is classic, much less fruity, some underbrush, leather. I think this will be lovely with an additional 10 years. But then that is the consensus with Barton always (and in ten years it will be in another ten years?). No really, I feel encouraged by the 03 & 90 experience... The 05 for me is better than their weak 2000.

Nice but not great. Would never guess this was 15 years old. Still very primary, dark fruits and little (or hidden) complexity. Still plenty of tannin but soft and fine. 5 more years ?

WFA Bordeaux Tasting 05 & 06: This is the second time tasting, was not very impressed the first and same the second time. Perhaps it is way too young. Extremely tight but good clean acid with thick tannins. Hopefully this indicates the potential of the wine

A surprising late addition to a 2005 tasting after we were able to acquire the bottle two days prior, the moment the 2005 Château Léoville Barton was in our hands, we had high hopes. It’s a vintage we’ve both been patiently waiting to open up and this bottle delivered everything we could have wanted and more after three hours in the decanter. Medium-bodied with notes of blackcurrant, plum and cassis dominating, the firm tannins make this an extremely well rounded and elegant wine. The Lagrange and Grand-Puy-Lacoste held their own, but this Léoville Barton was an exemplar for the 2005 vintage.

Clear, dark purple, fading to the rim, no sign of age. Clean nose, dark fruits dominate, cedar, tobacco, leather. Full palate, quite sweet and lush, fine tannins quite noticeable, nice strong backbone. Long finish. Excellent, but needs much more time. 92+
