2010 Firestone Walker ParabolaCalifornia Malt, Grain more |
12/10/2020 - boozebythecreek Likes this wine: NRSeems appropriate to enjoy the OG Parabola with my wife on our 10 year anniversary. Mind-blowing how good this is. Tons of barrel left with dark fruit and amazed there is still a good amount of carbonation. Mouthfeel is fantastic. |

2/14/2019 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRA little less complex than the XXI, but still quite tasty! This blend is Stickee Monkee-heavy, which is quite the relief, given that that's one of my two favorite FW barrel-aged beers year in and year out. The weirdest part is the gin barrel-aged Helldorado: while it's only 5% of the blend, it makes its presence known, drying out the finish and adding some botanical notes that are unexpected but interesting. It will be fascinating to see how this ages over time. |

12/19/2019 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRA little pregaming before The Rise of Skywalker! The year or so of age on this has made its flavor a bit milder, but it still maintains all of the hallmarks of a classic Firestone Walker box beer: a good amount of vanilla, tons of wood, and a very smooth finish. I wouldn't say the age has necessarily improved this brew, but it certainly didn't hurt it. |

7/20/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NROpened the day I bought it, to compare with the 2017 vintage. What's nice about the fresher vintages are the way that the fruit and the smokiness tends to shine a bit more, and this is no exception. But the bomb vanilla flavors that the FW box beers are known for are still there and strong. Good lord, I love this stuff. |

6/1/2019 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRAfter sitting on this bottle for a year, with the release of the new vintage, it was time to see how this had developed. Unfortunately, the lack of punch that characterized it a year ago has remained. The stout has a heartier body than I remember, which is a plus, and there's a good deal of wood coming through from the barrel, but with minimal vanilla and caramel notes, I was expecting more of the barrel's character to shine. Sadly, this just doesn't seem to hold up to my memories of older vintages. |

4/13/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRShared with friends, side-by-side with the 2017. While this was a major step up from the '17, it still doesn't stand up to previous years' Parabolas. A better body and mouthfeel, but there's just not as much complexity as in years past. The vanilla notes I crave are awfully subdued, and the wood is what dominates, to the detriment of even the flavors of the base beer. Better than last year, but still not great. |

3/6/2019 - dczapka Likes this wine: NROne year of Life to the next, to celebrate my wife's birthday! I very much enjoy §ucaba, but I feel like it gets thinner with each year, and the 2018 is no exception. A year of aging has substantially dried out the back end, leaving strong flavors of wood and hints of toast and caramel on the finish, and barely any perceptible sweetness in it. A touch on the mild side, but still a very accessible and refreshing barleywine. |

6/10/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRShared with friends to give back for their charity! A very late-in-the-evening opening, so I can't really critique it with detail, but it didn't make a terribly huge impact, and that's consistent with what I felt about this vintage upon release. |

3/10/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRABACU§UCABA, 7 out of 7. The final selection from the vertical was the freshest by far, and some of the rawer notes that I didn't detect from the first taste revealed themselves with the benefit of the vertical. Fortunately, this particular rendition has stood up with its compatriots and should age nicely as well. |

2/18/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRAfter a year off, I'm thrilled that this guy is back! A rich, woody nose gives way to a first sip with loads of vanilla. The more you sip, that wood and char presents more, shifting the flavor palate more toward burnt caramel, and finishing dryly on the swallow. This is making me look very much forward to a vertical in the future! |

2/14/2019 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRFor a beer that's plurality Velvet Merkin, I'm impressed with how well this brew has held up. The body is a touch thin, serving mostly as a canvas for the barrel notes, which are deep, woody, and pervasive. The other minority brews in the blend mingle beneath the barrel, but this is a woody beer through and through, and that's not a bad thing at all. |

7/7/2018 - dczapka Likes this wine: NRShared with my buddy. I enjoyed this when fresh and immediately released, but with some age, additional and more complex notes have developed. Rather than being exceedingly wood forward, time has revealed more dark fruit and raisin notes, which add additional smoothness and sweetness to a beer that already had plenty of that to begin with. |
