11/5/2008 - gregg g wrote: NRI popped this the night of the election. This is the story of the little Shiraz that could. I must commend Jon Rimmerman for this wine and the 2001 Bowen Estate Shiraz. Both wines have been, thankfully, unstereotypical for Shiraz. Both wines resemble Northern Rhone with the power and complexity of Cote Rotie and the rusticity and vigor of Cornas. The Mount Langhi shows notes of pepper, blueberry, animal, blood, roasted meats and herbs. It's graceful on the palate with a feeling of saturation without fatigue. Excellent balance and length. With air time, it begins to change somewhat by showing some dried fruit, slight raisin notes. It's a savory wine for sure and a superb deal. A great ringer to use in blind tastings. |

2/17/2008 - gregg g wrote: NRTN: Garagiste Wines at Marouch PT. II: Strong menthol, eucalyptus nose with some barely discernable fruit. The palate is better, but I can't get past the "Bengay" aromas that eventually overpower the wine. After about 30 minutes, it did begin to receed a bit I had moved on. |

It was too cold to get anything at first. After some time warming up it began to show a floral lemon/citirc nose. I can't quite put my finger on the texture description, but there was something going on. Perhaps a slight oiliness. Simply put this one was a winner and great qpr ($10). |

Great cut to the acidity with good lift. Long finish. This is a great find by Jon R. and what Garagiste is all about, imho. Super food wine. |

12/29/2005 - gregg g wrote: NRBirthday at Triumphal Palace: I have little experience with Gruner, having tried only a few examples. This bottle was easily the best so far. Lemon peel on the nose and palate with some minerals and spritz. This was more about texture then flavors. Very zippy acidity leading to a dry but firm structure. The finish is bit dry but the flavors persist some. Excellent food wine. Certainly went very well the shrimp dishes tonight. |

Revisited the remaining 1/3 on Friday (4 days later) and today and the wine is magnificent. Fruit is lovely, lemons and flowers. There's stones and minerals. Laser acidity. Pure and precise flavors with a terrific lengthy finish. Great qpr wine. |

The nose is mesmerizing starting out with a touch of diesel that eventually blows off leaving truffles, lychee, ginger and other components. Mouthfeel is viscous but not syrupy. Very little sweetness and lovely with food. The finish is forever. Just an amazing wine. |

12/10/2009 - gregg g wrote: NRI was invited to a Wine Spectator sponsored tasting of a few Alsatian wines last night. The tasting was at Drago Centro in downtown LA. Let me say that the restaurants beautiful and I very much enjoyed myself among the non-trade, which was a change of pace for me. There were several wines paired with different food "tastes". By a large margin, this wine was the clear leader among the pack which included: NV Albrecht Brut Cremant, '07 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris (very good), a Schlumberger Gewurztraminer Fleur-can't remember the vintage and a Pinot Blanc-can't remember the producer. |

I found it a bit tannic, but the material is impressive and I suspect this will be a really nice wine if the tannins integrate and the fruit survives. The wine was better with food, with a nice core of mocha coming through. I'm happy to have more of this. |

Wonderful nose of flint, lemon/lime and cut grass. Great palate texture with nice minerality, seemingly this wines best asset. Pretty much coating the palate liberaly, yet not too thick and goopy. The firm acidity balances the rich fruit from this vintage very well. Absolutely delicious. FWIW, RP's note is spot on. Awesome qpr at $13. |

These notes continue through on the plate with the tobacco coming clearly through. Fruits are red/blue but not well defined. Drinking quite well right now with supple tannins. The length and finish are above average with some lingering flavors. I would wager drink up. |

5/29/2005 - gregg g wrote: NRClearly a darker wine than the Figeac, initially showing aromas of currant, cedar but then morphing into an unusual, but distinctive note of soy sauce. The nose shut down tight after a few minutes of air, so we decanted. The fruit seemed rather high toned and forward, with some non-obtrusive oak and moderate tannins. Eventually the palate developed a note of mint and eucalyptus. The sweet tannins also seemed to gain presence with air. The wine finished with medium length and slightly sweet. |

This is a modern expression of Bordeaux with toasty oak flavors that tend to overwhelm the fruit. The fruit shows a dark profile of cassis and chocolate without any mature flavors. It's full bodied and rich. The tannins are rounding a bit but still present and somewhat sweet. I'm down to only a handful of the .375mls. Thinking of waiting a few years before I open the next one. |

Drinking at peak for my palate. Very nice length with lingering flavors. I don't drink a lot of Bordeaux but Figeac is one of my favorite Chateau. The rebel of the right bank. What a steal this was for under $20 on release. |

9/17/2011 - gregg g wrote: NRMy last bottle of this and may have showed a touch less pleasurable than a year ago. The aromas a bit muted and shy. The flavors seem more restrained, earthy and delicate. There is complexity, yet it's more along the lines of damp earth, tobacco, savory herbs and tea like. Another wine that requires food to turn up the pleasure factor. The finish is of medium length and a touch drying. I liiked it but did not love it. |

5/29/2005 - gregg g wrote: NRIn comparison to the Monbousquet, the color was lighter leaning more towards opaque crimson. This wine was completely closed and tight upon opening. After a while in the decanter it began to open and show notes of cassis, mushroom, earth and cedar. The wine had a velvet texture on entry though it showed more pronounced tannins. The aromas continued on the palate and after sometime developed classic notes of lead pencil and cocoa. A wonderful structure and terrior presence to this as well. The finish was very nice at least of medium length (20+ seconds). |
