Much better than the first bottle in 1998. The nose is a poem. Full, soft, complex. Truffles, tea, cinnamon, precious woods, cassis, blackcurrant, oleander....all there. Also perfect on the palate. Again blackcurrant, fine spices, coffee. Full body, super soft, pure elegance. The finish is impressive and tops the palate.

Just a little bit oxidized but still very much alive. Developed and complex bouquet of earth mushrooms, violets, leather and touch of ripe red fruit. The tannins are still there but very softened. Nice bright acidity, and a long finish. We drank the wine in probably about an hour and it never died. What impressed me the most is that the wine had barely any sediments in the bottle. I will grade this wine 100, based on the wonderful experience: a 45 year old wine still holding up beautifully.

Long cork, wet all the way.
Started out with a Bdx style earthy and bretty presence with dill. On the palate it was acidic and thin.
Fast forward 5 hrs of decant.
Beautiful transparent red with slight bricking.
Nose is beautiful, multilayered and complex. Dill, pipe tobacco, caramel and vanilla notes from the oak, small brett, earthy, wet leaves, medicinal herbs, cherry compote and a mix of non-sweet red berries like lingon berries and cranberries. Tremendous and beautiful. Nothing old or off. Even loved by wofey!
Palate is elegant and packs a beautiful punch. Racy acids kept in check by red berries (again non-sweet lingonberries and craneberries) with a small pang of bitterness. Licorice, dill, oak, cherries, autumn leaves, old wooden boat in the sunshine, non-fruit tea leaves, rain on sand and many more fabulous aromas. Fascinating as always with these fantastic maturing btls is how they bloom after a few hours and that even tannins come out.
My thinking is that if the cork holds, this will continue to evolve for another 10-20 years and supply all patient drinkers (let it breaaaaathe!) with sublime pleasures. With a good cork, this will be much alive as a centennial.
Did outstandingly well with all dishes at Pecorella on Valentine's Day. Will definitely buy on sight!

The 1925 shines like a diamond in the sand. Subtle like Picasso, harmonic like Beethoven, and sophisticated like Goethe. At over 89 years of age, undiminished by age, this is perhaps one of the greatest wines I have tasted.
Almost burgundian on the nose, with a surprisingly fresh palate, and a buffet of flavors (from tomatoes to chorizo). A spectacularly decadent wine.

Corcho impregnado en su totalidad, inflado, sin ninguna adherencia al cuello de la botella. Había perdido un centímetro de altura pero seguía cumpliendo su función sin permitir fuga. Botella degollada y parcialmente decantada. Veamos: extraordinario color granate marronoso de capa media-alta, muy oscuro, tapado. Podría pasar por un Riscal de los 70. Turbio, sin brillo, con un finísimo granulado en suspensión y precipitado en forma de escamas en la base de la botella. Borde atejado, estrecho, con una gran diferencia respecto al menisco.
Conserva la plenitud de sus primeros días y una potencia que desafía la lógica. Embiste con su energía cinética. Un atropello de aromas a tueste de cacao, balsámicos (menta, after-eight), anís estrellado, maderas envinadas, bombón en licor, maraska, naranjas confitadas, grand marnier... La botella humea!!! No se queda quieto y en vez de venirse abajo después de un par de horas sigue en una tesitura altísima adquiriendo un sutil matiz a vainilla, fruta pasa (ciruelas, orejones), miel, bûche de noël, especias de navidad (gengibre, clavo, nuez moscada), azúcar quemado, caramelo de cola...
Pero es en boca donde lo borda!! Cuesta creer que estemos ante un vino de Elciego. De Riscal ha heredado esa veta de acidez que nunca se agota, la concentración y una estructura granítica. Pero quizás tenga más a ver con los antiguos Paternina y Mariano Lacort: la misma elegancia de vino abocado, puro, de profunidad abisal, fresco, vivaz, ligero al tacto, ligado y discursivo, del todo integrado, sin atisbo de decrepitud. Quién llegara a los 87 años en esta forma!!!

60% tempranillo, 40% cabernet sauvignon y otras. 9% vol.
- Contiene un porcentaje poco significativo de uvas blancas, viurade forma mayoritaria , pues en aquel entonces se plantaban en las cabezadas de las viñas algunas cepas de de diversas variedades blancas para el consumo familiar. A la hora de la vendimia buena parte de estas uvas se recolectaba también para ser ensambladas en los vinos tintos. Vendimia manual y selección de racimos a su llegada a bodega. Vinificación conjunta de todas las variedades. Permanece entre 18 y 24 meses en grandes depósitos de madera de la época fundacional en los que realiza las fermentaciones y reposa antes de ser trasegado para su posterior crianza. Madurado en barricas viejas de roble americano de 225 litros entre 5 y 7 años. Trasiegos manuales de barrica a barrica cada 3 meses durante los primeros tres años con el objetivo de evitar el filtrado del vino antes del embotellado. Clarificación tradicional con claras de huevo frescas y embotellado a mano directamente de la barrica. Un mínimo de 10 años de guarda en botellero en los calados de la bodega antes de ser comercializado.

N: Oak, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, and cherry.
T: chocolate, leather, vanilla, oak, hints of cloves and fruity notes of cherry and plum. Very smooth, seductive.
This is beautiful beautiful wine. A stunning Rioja. Amazing.
99/100 for me.

Worlds Best Vineyards 2023, 2nd evening hosted at Riscal.
Pale garnet, with large water white rim. The nose is very much on the tertiary notes, leather but still some hints of dried red fruit. Tobacco. Slight celery note. Tarry smoky notes.
Really soft palate, soft tannins so well integrated. Incredible length, at least 3 mins. Amazingly fresh and still relatively youthful.
Rapidly changing in the glass. Not one to decant or to leave too long in the glass. It’s evolving and fading in the glass.

Precioso color rubí rojizo de media capa, claro, limpio, reflejos cobrizos y anaranjados, borde atejado.
Nariz profunda, muy compleja, llena de elegancia y de una finura que tan sólo podía elaborar Riscal en sus mejores años. Y en esta ocasión, de qué manera!!! Inicialmente se presenta abierto y comunicativo. Hay una paleta larguísima de aromas reductivos de gran calidad: cava de puros, cedro, abedul, ebanistería, aceite de tung, cuero ruso, especias dulces. Todo esto seguido de un deje mineral-terroso que engarza suaves balsámicos (cacao verde, confitura de naranja, laurel, salvia, yedra) y la fruta en sazón, fragante, jugosa, especiada. Hermoso, fino, etéreo, misterioso, sin acabar de dejarse ver, sin puntas ni altibajos, de una entereza y solidez fantásticas. No para de crecer al respirar adquiriendo un hermoso aire otoñal a sotobosque, humus, corteza de nogal, marron glacé. Un tinto señorial, precioso!!!
Sedoso, de taninos que podrían describirse como fundidos, grasos, en un todo de apabullante elegancia y equilibrio. Esférico, sin una sola arista, brioso, vivo, con acidez del todo integrada en un conjunto armónico y redondo. Lleno de fruta roja jugosa y confitada que se alarga y envuelve la boca. Un vino que roza la perfección. Esperemos que unos años más de guarda le hagan dar el paso definitivo.

This is a magnificently and superbly elegant Rioja with only reasons to love it! Truly amazing!
Our btl today, needed a three hour decant to loose its tiolet-stinky sulphur and open up. Stood itself well over the three hour dinner, following the 3h decant and ensuing 3h under cork,before restaurant release!
Beautiful mature robe in a more transparent way than Bdx.
Nez is rich with earthy, floral, ground-based aromatics plus a good dollop of sumi ink and red berries. Pre-dbldecant, there were some complaints of toiletlike sulphuric terribleness, but it got itself resolved within 2 hrs after decanting.
In the mouth, this is a mid-weight champion that simply transcends reality. Beautiful 1000-needle tannins, M+ acidity, transparency and intensity. This is firm and mature at the same time. Still many things to resolve before it reaches zenith. Truly amazing!
For every dish, it adapted to be the perfect enhancer, fat-breaker or companion. And it did it amazingly well!

Espectacular color para un vino que va camino de los 100 años. Rubí marronoso de capa media-alta, ligeramente turbio con partículas diminutas en suspensión, reflejos anaranjados y rojizos, ribete atejado con claras diferencias con el menisco.
Botellas abiertas durante un par de horas antes de servirlas. Aromas de gran concentración y fina reducción, con un apunte de acético que aparecía y desaparecía. Inicialmente, al servir y a copa parada, aparecen notas de odres de cuero, duelas, setas secas, incienso... Al agitar la copa y respirar se transforma: salvia, té egipcio, endrinas en sazón, guinda en licor, encina quemada, pedernal, carne, ahumados, laurel, clavo, especias... Sigue evolucionando dando paso a notas de fruta negra y roja dulzona, azúcar caramelizado y un curioso recuerdo a un vinagre extra-viejo de Modena, tipo Extra Oro. De gran calidad e intensidad!!! ¿¿88 años?? Difícil de creer...
En boca paraliza por su frescor y por una amplitud más propia de una gran infraestructura. Vino en plenitud, de contundente acidez, vivísimo, vigoroso, con una estructura más fibrada que musculosa que se ha ido tramando y limando durante años en botella. Se ha puesto todo en su justo sitio, integrado, esférico. No deja de cobrar vida al oxigenarse apareciendo más fruta madura con un deje cítrico, especias, ligeros amargosos, tostados, vainilla. Un tinto resplandeciente del que es difícil creer su edad si no fuera por esa nota acética tan fuera de lo habitual. Una muestra más de la magnitud gigantesca de los viejos Riscales. Ay Riscal, quién te ha visto y quién te ve!!!!

What a great surprise. I had 3 bottles left of 2005. One I had today 3/19/23. This was by far the best!!! This wine is getting better after 18 years… wow… Decanted for 30 minutes. Didn’t need much more. Beautiful aromas and flavors of oak vanilla tobacco cherry plum blackberry chocolate black fruit pepper dark fruit cedar raspberry prune coffee coconut. Very smooth full body. Perhaps the best Rioja I ever had. Definitely up there…

Incredible bottle. Very long and healthy cork. Only a slight garnet on the rim, with a deep vibrant red core. Hints of leather and earth, but this also had an unbelievable amount of fresh red fruit. No dill or oak, just lovely, energetic, lifted red fruits. The tannins were velvety but not flabby. Such a wonderful drinking experience for a 60 year old wine.

De color rubí granatoso de capa media, reflejos granadinos y anaranjados, limpio, brillante. Ribete rojizo, estrecho, con marcadas diferencias con el menisco. En la línea de las grandes añadas de Riscal: no parece un vino con más de 70 años a sus espaldas, muy estable de color, con sensación de estar ante un tinto con tres o cuatro décadas menos...
En nariz es perfumado, liviano, elegante, con apuntes de fruta roja en confitura, guinda, tomate seco, pétalos marchitos y un fondo terroso muy delicado y hermoso. Las maderas están fundidas al conjunto, sutiles, con apenas tostados, un recuerdo a café aromático. Elegante!!! Sensaciones de gran calidad y profundidad. Al tomar aire se va especiando (pimientas, clavo, ahumados) dando aromas de trufa negra, laurel en rama, múrgulas, tierra mojada, boletus, maderas nobles, tabaco inglés. Abierto y sin síntomas de cansancio. No deja de crecer en todo momento aumentando en intensidad y presencia.
En boca es íntegro, vivísimo, de gran finura y potencia, concentrado, con una acidez marcada, refrescante, a la que se une esa acidez cítrica que nos trae fruta madura, ligeramente dulzosa y caramelos aragoneses. Todo en su sitio, fino, ordenado, redondo, de una expresión aristocrática pero sin perder el nervio en ningún momento. Final largo y confitado, con un retrogusto picante y esa acidez interminable. Un Riscal de verdad, de esos que no se olvidan.
