2010 Peter Lehmann Art 'n' Soul

Barossa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

{screwcap, 14.5%, A$12} Cabernet-merlot blend. Lots of Barossa sweet red & black fruit. At this price you don’t get much varietal definition, but there’s a mass of ripe fruits, spiced with peppery notes (merlot?), a soft lick of coconut oak, classic menthol, very gentle loose-knit tannins, and fairly ragged, artificial-tasting acidity. It’s not raw enough to be called rustic, but it’s still a bit commercial and simple, with a short finish that does belie the sweetness you get on the nose. Quintessential BBQ wine.

Shiraz 78 %, Grenache 22 % mixture, This was my 12th bottle of the case after about four months of . The first, drunk about four months ago, bottle was rough and we didn't particularly care for it. This bottle is very good, nice smooth, flavorful. If they had all been this good, I would give it a higher rating.

This is a very solid 87, maybe 88 point wine. It seems the 25% Cabernet nicely enhances with a touch of structure the grapy rich fruit Shiraz. When I first twisted off the cap, I thought this was going to be overly oaky, but just a little bit of air balanced it out pretty quickly. The nose is mostly fruit, blackberry and plum. Almost complex layers of spice, fruit and earth. Nicely integrated bright blackberry fruit with decent acid and tannins. Develops as it flows down the palate, and as we get deeper in the glass. Not quite concentrated enough for a big score. Has that mouth coating, fruity, lingering finish we expect from Aussie Shiraz.

Just a touch past its prime but not bad for an 85% shiraz. There are smoke and earthy spices on the nose along with berries leaning towards red and crushed. The oak is well integrated leaving an impression of ground almonds along with black pepper to add to mouthwatering red berries on the bold side. The lack of grape tannin makes the wine a bit thin in the finish but not to be frowned upon. A good wine for tonights' ground pork red sauce over angel hair pasta. A little in the sauce does the job.

Serviceable wine, supermarket buy. No nose to speak of, but tasted heavy plum and grape flavors. A little hot a first, but a little decant allows that to blow off.

Browning out a bit to garnet. Very fruit nose of raspberry and cassis. First pass of the tongue is green fruit and limited acid. Once aerated it shines for its age. Well balanced fruit and acid.

Gorgeous nose of blackcurrants, fruit pastille and Ribena. A wonderful port with blackberry essence, drying tannins, sweetness and spirity kick from the alcohol. Tastes young but old at the same time. Herbal (?medicinal) notes on the finish. This is a good port, drinking well and no signs of falling over anytime soon.

Medium ruby red color with slight purple tinge at the edge.
On the nose sweet, sugary fruit, tannin, alcohol.
Lots of sweetness up-front; then comes a firm tannin grip. Smooth, medium length finish. Less "grip" than I would expect from a true port/
Showing very young for it's age (18 years) + at this stage of its life quite pleasant - lots of "ruby port" characteristics -
but not overly complex.
Should keep developing over the next 15-20 years; the tannins present in the wine should hold it together

A blend of Shiraz and Touriga Nacional from the Kalimna district in Barossa. 20% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Dense, almost fully opaque cherry red color with an evolved maroon hue. A little bit of fine-grained, powdery deposit in the glass. The nose feels very rich, concentrated and fragrant with perfumed, Porty aromas of blackberry marmalade, prunes, some lifted cool notes of eucalyptus, light blueberry juice tones, a little bit of overripe figs, a boozy hint of alcohol and a touch of wild, colorful flowers. Completely oblivious to those eucalyptus notes, I'm pretty sure this must be Vintage Port, because otherwise the wine smells exactly like a Vintage Port would. The wine is full-bodied, rather sweet and somewhat evolved on the palate with rich yet surprisingly savory flavors of blackberry marmalade and bilberry juice, some peppery spice, light evolved notes of meaty umami, a little bit of charred game, a lifted hint of cooling eucalyptus character and a touch of raisiny dark fruit. The alcohol lends some obvious heat to the palate. Structurally the wine is balanced, but a bit on the soft side, thanks to the medium-to-moderately high acidity and resolved, quite mellow tannins. The finish is sweet, quite hot and gently grippy with bold, concentrated flavors of blueberries, game, some peppery spice, light raisiny tones, a little bit of blackberry marmalade, a cool hint of eucalyptus and a touch of dried figs.

A rich, complex and wonderfully balanced Vintage Port that is not a Vintage Port. I was just dead sure it was, seeing how it drank exactly like one - except for that eucalyptus note I noticed right from the start, yet didn't think it actually would point out to the other side of the globe. All in all, a fantastic wine that is drinking wonderfully right now but will continue to improve for a good handful of years more and keep for a lot longer. I need to keep my peepers peeled if another bottle happens to come my way. Superb stuff, highly recommended.

nothing much to speak of on the nose, very muted. Too much of a ruby port taste, nothing vintage like and nothing to suggest deep aged complexity of a 23 year old bottle matured fortified. Very disappointing. I hope its the cork but the previous tasters comment makes me think it is the wine. Ended up pouring it down the sink (was drinkable).

Easter during Covid lockdown. I wondered what this was like now. Decanted. Dark mahogany, and mostly opaque. Bouquet with a telltale eucalyptus to tell you this isn't Portugal. It smells like vintage port and nicely ripe sweaty Oz syrah together. Palate has a lot of zesty acids - thank goodness. Nice bones and structure there. Not a flabby sweet pudding. This is actually very comparable to vintage port in character and stature. The flavour profile is skewed towards sweat and raspberry due to the syrah for sure, but it's all figs and raisins and honeyed herbs too. Kind of fresh and yet mature. Long and complex. More Fonseca than Taylor, in terms of style. The flavour is unique. This is really very good indeed! Perhaps a tiny touch spirity at the end, but that is a quibble. Damn, why didn't I buy loads of this back in the 90s???

(Going to have some with some Roquefort tomorrow too!)
