11/3/2017 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 pointsTrying to be generous, but sorry I just don't get this wine. It seems metallic and austere to my palate. It lacks that ripe sweet red and dark fruit we expect from Oregon Pinot. Others may appreciate this, but I think it is dull in comparison to the many tasty Oregon Pinot' that cross my palate. It is not exactly a bad or flawed wine. Decided to use the vinturi at this point, which releases some dark cherry preserves and some charcoal tannins, so lets swirl the you know what out of it. Voila! here comes some Oregon Pinot. The annoying metallic flavor never goes away. Must be some medium heavy toast oak. The fruit still has problems penetrating the secondary stuff. There are so many other delicate, fruity, floral Pinot's to choose from. |

2014 J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon Seven OaksPaso Robles more |
6/10/2017 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 87 pointsWaited overnight to evaluate. Last night the nose and palate were way too oaky. Second day things settled down a bit, but still way too much vanilla and other indications of oak. Plenty of fruit and indications of inspired winemaking. Good deep rich color. Full bodied, mouth coating, California style, ripe, hedonistic enjoyment. Probably a touch of RS. Complete, balanced, lively and smooth, but still too much oak.

2013 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Red BlendColumbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more |
1/8/2016 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 pointsThis is a totally serviceable red blend from Washington State, especially considering it's very appealing $7.99 price tag. This is not a big powerful, blow you away wine. It has serious dark color and a fruity nose. The weight on the palate is only OK. Solid if not overwhelming combination of mostly red fruit that harmonize together. Clean red fruit finish with a touch of oak.

2014 Two Hands Cabernet Sauvignon Sexy BeastMcLaren Vale more |
9/26/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 91 pointsThe first thing to note, this is a Cabernet, not a Shiraz from McLaren Vale. By what we taste, it seems the terroir is very well suited to Cabernet. It still exhibits the big, fruit forward, rotary fermentor soft approachability we expect from the Aussie's. Deep purple color. Rich, yet elegant, super ripe blueberry and cherry. A little to ripe to have developed an overpowering acidity. The alcohol, tannins and oak are already commendably integrated for a red wine so young. Very smooth rotary fermentation finish with vanilla enhancing the considerable dark fruit profile.

9/12/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 pointsAnother value gem from Aldi. For $7 we get a crisp, refreshing, solidly balanced white wine. Not necessarily all that fruity. Green apple with lemon and grapefruit. Fairly moderate acid compared to a lot we get from Cotes de Gascogne. Does not have real big finish, but really pretty tasty.

2013 Terra d'Oro Winery Chenin Blanc ViognierClarksburg White Blend more |
6/5/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 pointsLong a fan of a similar offering from Pine Ridge Winery, had to give this a try. Very satisfied with my choice. Though I often contemplate "why not just individual Chenin and Viognier" have to admit this blend has some merit. The combination of the Viognier bringing some body and richness, and the Chenin bringing some crisp acidity, the result is a taste and flavor profile neither could achieve alone. A wide range of fruit from melon, papaya, mango, pear, peach and apricot to citrus and pineapple. Maybe a tiny bit flabby, and probably best served at close to room temperature.

2012 Jacob's Creek Classic Shiraz CabernetSouth Eastern Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more |
2/11/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 83 pointsThis is the first time we have tried this relatively new to us, "Classic" label Shiraz Cabernet blend. Bought it a Kroger for almost twice we pay for the regular label, were expecting a step above in flavor and concentration, but were disappointed. Though mildly fruity, and mostly characteristic to these 2 noble red varietals, the overall impression was basically thin and washed out. The color was Aussie Shiraz purple. The nose was somewhat industrial not necessarily fruity. There is some rotary fermented style red and dark fruit, but it just lacks any real concentration. A little air and time in the glass helped, but still pretty thin and boring.

2007 Bodegas Valdemar Rioja Conde de Valdemar CrianzaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
5/31/2014 - kbcadeponei wrote: 87 pointsBeautiful initial attack with fresh american oak, cranberries, strawberries and spices. Huge first impression after a long finish. I was thinking i hit jackpot, but, after breathing, this wine turned to be a tough drinking one, with an uncomfortable heat at every sip. Dark red with orange glow. Nose with lots of raspberrry, american oak, leather. Something excessively citric. Always present alcohol. Light to medium body, hardly sustaining its intensity. Too much heat going on. The flavours are its main quality. Typical Rioja crianza woodlike base, ripe fruit, nice vanila and salty spices compose its palate. Finishes long, spicy. A good wine, typically tempranillo, but not an easy drink.

11/4/2013 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 pointsWe opened this yesterday, took a small taste and decided to decant and drink the next day. Upon opening, flavor was hard to find. It tasted very rough and unforgiving. So here we are 24 hours later, and it is showing some promise, but still considerably rough. The best characteristic is the finish. When you get past the rusticity, the finish has a lead pencil meets orange peel flavor this works. Not really a fruity wine. The fruit we do get is a fine tuned, almost maraschino, style of cherry. The color has that Merlot magenta. There is some considerable French oak, which may not yet, like the fruit be ready. This is one for the vinturi, decanter and the cellar.

2010 Cupcake Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Central Valleymore |
2/10/2013 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 89 pointsThey certainly produced and imported this for the American palate. There is no doubt about its Chilean origins with some of those black tea and tree bark flavors, but they have been toned down a little. Upon opening, there was a big hit of new oak. The nose has that smell of a winery barrel room with blackberry preserves, dark cherry and heavy toast barrels. There is a very nice creamy richness to the super black fruit across the palate. There are almost enough layers of complexity to cross the 90 point glass ceiling. Nice job with the oak integration. The acid is a little raw, and may be able to age a few years. The glass staining finish is black cherry skins with plum, and light dry tannins, that lasts for minutes.

The nose fully of super ripe black fruits with just hint of eucalyptus. In the mouth it’s nothing but chocolate covered cherries. Tannins are still a bit chewy so I’m sure this could benefit from a few years of bottle aging but I really don’t see the need to wait for this wine when there are so many other age worthy wines in the $40 range.
