Bordeaux Today (2005s & A Lone 2004) (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Dark red purple core to light purple at the rim. This offers brilliant terroir on the nose with notes of slate and earth as well as sweet fruits such as blackberry and raspberry. The supple licorice laced entry on this wine is undeniably attractive and leads to lifted dark berries and sweet tannins. I also found this wine to be gorgeously balanced and structured. Reminds me of the Larrivet Haut Brion which I also found to be a compelling effort in this vintage.

Popped and poured; open for business from the get go but improved over a couple of hours. Like Badfish below this also reminded me of the Larrivet, with a balanced entry that smoothly transitions to a earthy middle with nice sweet tannins on the finish. However, I feel it lacks the structure in Larrivet and felt a little hollow in the middle ... probably better suited for early drinking. Still, because it isn't particularly tannic I couldn't stop sipping and its one of those wines that can get you drunk rather quickly. Had a 1/3 bottle left so I vacupumped and put it in the fridge. Day 2 - very flat ... lost almost all dimensions. Definitely a single-day drinker only (79 on day 2).

More Recent Release Bordeaux (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Medium color and saturation. Lively, bright aromas of redder fruit and licorice. Truly lovely light to medium body with pure fruit, excellent texture, and gentle finish. Very little that would give this away as a Graves or an '05, but completely enjoyable now. Another producer I'd never heard of much less tried.

Nose of black fruits and violets. Same profile on palate, with plush fruit quality and interestingly not too thick-- slightly thin texture-- and interesting minerality. It paired beautifully with lamb. I'm not sure it will last 15 years, but certainly should drink well if not improve for 5 years.

From Magnum. Classic Bordeaux aromas and flavors of red and black berries, earth, mint, and a touch of tobacco. This medium+ body effort shows the ripeness and a bit of the weight of the vintage, though never crosses the line. Lacks great depth and structure, but what it delivers is a modestly complex wine that offers some pleasure while maintaining interest glass after glass. Not one for the long haul though I suspect this has another 5+ years to go. Good value priced effort and an accurate reflection of the '05 vintage.

Nice dark fruited nose that, thankfully, is not at all Port-like in its ripeness. Touches of savories, along with tobacco, asphalt and earth blend well with the fruit flavors. Nice balance on the palate. Lovely wine, if lacking just a bit in complexity of mouthfeel.

Belle couleur. Nez Simple. Pas de nuances. Juste le fruit.
La bouche est assez pleine. Par contre ça finit très court.
A la réflexion, pas de plaisir particulier à boire ce vin

Medium bodied, forward, and ready to go, with its smoky black and red cherry personality. From a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is not a wine for aging. Instead it's well priced and fine for uncomplicated quaffing today.

Decanted for two hours. Concentrated and polished, this colossus of a vin could use a few more years, however, is quite long and evocative. Crushed rock, currant, lilies and fresh tobacco; very Graves in so many ways. Quite modern. Drink 2019 - 2034.

Given other taster's notes I was looking forward to this but sadly it was not interesting in any way. I appreciated the gravely earthiness but it lacked charm, finesse, and integration. Maybe it was in a dumb phase.

Nice value wine play that is already showing off its dark cherry fruit complicated with smoke, thyme, earth and cigar wrapper accents. Medium/full bodied, round and open for business. This is not a wine for aging, but one that is ready to drink today.

My Grade: EX. Tannic and somewhat unapproachable when young, this wine still showed a lot of promise and good aging potential. 10 years on it is into its drinking window. Great color: deep opaque purple with some rim- bricking, subdued but complex nose of cassis, blackberry, tar, vanilla, baking bread, shoe polish, forest floor. Very focused, intense, sour black fruit on the palate with burnt-toast, cranberry, tobacco and cedar. It still has great structure with fine-lined acidity and well-integrated, firm tannins. Very long, complex finish of sour cassis and cranberry. Unquestionably Graves in character. Great winemaking, which you don't expect at this price point and from a great vintage too! Hard to find in US.

Medium garnet, beautiful bricking at the rim
M+ Intensity nose, a bit reticent but pleasurable aromas of
Red and black fruit (red and black currant) with violets and slight note of tar, baking spice particularly cinnamon, eucalyptus, mushroom, still presenting young to the nose
M+ acid attack in balance with high, gritty tannins
M+ Body, M alcohol, this Mejean is light on its feet
Medium finish (will this develop)
VG Wine with clear further aging potential given fruit still present and strong acid/tannin structure, even likely to improve

I would not hesitate to drink now but decant for at least 1hr (My tasting was closer to PNP)
