2002 Río Seco Cabernet Franc Rio Seco

Paso Robles more

Opened up nicely, with passionate aromatics of dried fruits and crushed red flowers.
Refined notes of blackcherry and wilted rose petals, with detailed dark chocolate.
As the air circulates through this wine it transforms into a more herbal and earthy
red. Fresh sage, anise and a touch of black tea leaf leads to a finish that pulls up
just a tad light. Better in it's youth, but still admirable, and best with food at this
point.

Better than most CA cfs I've had: body and backbone, maybe a little too extracted for my tastes, but decidedly above typical Paso reds; drink up

Best in the Rio Seco show? Structure, class, restrained in style for a Paso red, fairly priced. Ready.

Ripe cab franc flavors, including a noticeable tobacco leaf notes. Well structured, but softening at this point. Drink up if you have any.

Not quite white Zin as there is actually good flavor in this wine, but REALLY fruity. Think big ripe strawberry.

Purple to inky, despite being vertical for 48 hours before opening. Medium to slow legs. Aromas and flavors: think black. Blackberry, black currant, prune, raisins, black cherry. These were complimented by understated aromas that seem to evolve in layered/linear fashion: medium toast, coffee, chocolate, soy sauce and vanilla. Linear and polished texture. Body and finish medium; acidity low to medium. At $22, QPR is average. Because of its complexity, I believe it is a good value Paso Cab. Purchased at the winery in 2011. It seems we made a good choice. Drink now or in 2018.

No immediate rush, but I wouldn't wait forever, either -- it ain't goin' nowhere profound; it's a medium-extracted wine that's a little pruney but mostly in balance; the tell-tale Paso softness is there, but this has more mid-palate than most; serves a steak well, and it is certainly in its optimum drinking window

Faint jamminess mars an otherwise well-structured medium weight red, went well with a steak; no need to drink quickly, but absolutely no reason to hold this, either; once again, $4$, for Paso reds this winery more than holds its own; in the worldwide marketplace, that's another story...

Not my style of wine; upon opening, nearly undrinkable, but the over-extracted qualities diminished somewhat, and after some Belgian triples, I could choke it down; but the wine remains a hot, unbalanced Paso red, and anyone seeking this wine out be trippin to the max; no need to hold any further

I was pleasantly surprised by this bottle. Rich and mouthfilling but not heavy in any way, with the spiced blackberry pie notes I expected, and none of the telltale Paso "bug spray" aromas that I hate.
Must consume our remaining 2 bottles soon.

These (Rio Seco) are all more b-b-q wines rather than serious drinking wines, but this one has more heft than others, and it's not a typical Paso jammy wine; holding fine, but softening with age may remove anything that makes it noteworthy now...

Opening night, what else you gonna drink? Giants played like this tastes -- not bad, but not especially good either; restrained in style and price for a Paso red, which means it's only half as bad as most and only 50% over-priced. Ready. Soft but not too fleshy, slight black fruit on the palate. Would be great in sangria.
