10/2/2016 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRThis wine really blossomed after being open a few hours. Deep, dark, but restrained. Seamless from start to finish. Very young but very enjoyable with appropriate air. My WOTN. |

2018 Carboniste Albariño Extra BrutSacramento Valley more |
1/3/2020 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRSimple, bright, tangy, sweet Albariño fruit, persistent stream of bubbles, fun, easy to enjoy (chug) on a hot day. 12% ab. Chuckled at the Extra Brut notation on one side of the label and the 5g/l dosage on the other side. Went great with grocery store baby back ribs smothered in bbq sauce. |

6/14/2011 - River Rat wrote: NRServed cold. Light straw color. Initial nose of green apple and pear. Light bodied with lots of acidity, minerality and some effervescence when swished in the mouth. Finishes off with tart apple and as it warms up leaves pineapple lingering on for a couple minutes. Real enjoyable on this 88 degree+ evening. |

8/11/2014 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRPnP chilled. Nose of fruit salad, banana, strawberry, honeydew melon. Palate brings some white peaches, great texture and zippy acidity. Really feeling this tonight. Looks as though this is my last bottle though. Vegetarian Chili was a nice pairing. |

10/12/2014 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRNose of lemon, honey, nectarine and white flowers. No nonsense creamy texture comes off slightly flabby but the acid turns on late creating a crisp enjoyable finish. Lean 12.5 abv, fun and refreshing wine. |

2019 Hatzidakis Winery Assyrtiko NykteriSantorini more |
6/22/2023 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRMy first time with this wine. Wow, is this good. A full bodied Assyrtiko with a bit of an oak signature but packed full of crushed rock minerality, lanolin, white nectarine, and citrus. There’s a citrus blossom note on the nose that I dig. Bursting with fresh acidity and lemon it was most pleasurable at room temp. Old Vine sur lee Assyrtiko? Hell yeah. |

11/1/2011 - River Rat wrote: 90 pointsOpened on release notes from day 2. I gave this an overnight airing to help it along but on first pour it had fantastic tart acidity. 13.4% abv, dark cherry/cranberry in color like a Sonoma Coast PN. Nose displays a syrah like earthiness without the weight with the addition of some spice notes. Up front it's bright and tart but still not showing a whole lot of fruit. Mid palate starts a bit flat weight wise but then turns real juicy and gives off black raspberry, fresh cracked pepper and some cinnamon flavors. Fine chalky tannins on a semi-medium finish. Hard to say whether it will improve with age but it's looking like a good T'Giving pairing at this point since it seems very food friendly. |

1954 Henriques & Henriques Madeira Boalmore |
4/8/2017 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRMy first visit to Bern's Steakhouse (Tampa): Off to the dessert room at Bern's. Another futile attempt at the menu so I deferred to the server who recommended this Madeira. Nutty, burnt caramel, some lacquer and charred oak. Creamy, ripe banana, orange oil, loads of sweet tangy goodness and espresso bean. The finish went on for days. Complimented my Macadamia nut ice cream so well that they should offer them as a package. Really fun experience. |

5/22/2022 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRPop n pour, a little reduction at first but it blew off. Notes from 3hrs in. This one is a winner, big bold mouthful of black currant, mocha and cedar. Wonderful balance and depth with layers of blackberry, blueberry framed by chewy tannins and french oak. This is Mike at his best. |

5/30/2012 - River Rat wrote: NRReal pretty nose of ripe red fruit, pencil shavings, incense and tobacco. Palate a touch fruity but also has some acid, green pepper and grippy tannins that follow through big time on the finish. Still has some years to come around. Looking good though. |

8/29/2011 - River Rat wrote: 90 pointsThe '09 release is coming up so I had to kill one to see if I wanted to renew. Bottle dipped in wax but it already had a capsule on it before being waxed. Haven't seen that before. What a waste of a capsule and it made it more difficult to keep debris from entering the bottle once opened. Dark ruby purple, coats the glass nicely. Über young. Decanted for 2 + hours before it even showed a thing. Early on the palate was flat and lifeless. |

11/26/2017 - River Rat wrote: NRRipe blue and black fruit on the nose, 3hrs in the palate is dark extracted fruit, tannins are firm and grippy. Needs another 5+ years for the fruitto settle down and the tannins to soften. Bigger than I expected. |

9/22/2010 - River Rat wrote: NRThis started singing at 2-1/2 hours and kept improving until I had to re-cork it for the night. Beautiful fruit, gobs of black, red and blue...great texture, silky smooth, loads of tannins that integrated a bit but are still very prominent, pencil lead, mocha... super long finish. Oh man this is good. My first Rivers-Marie Cab, what an experience. |

8/16/2010 - River Rat wrote: NRPop and pour to see how it develops. Right out of the gate this one is drinking pretty darn good. Deep dark fruit with a heavy leather nose. Gripping tannins that smooth out after an hour or so. Lingering vanilla on a full bodied mouth feel. Long, long finish. This one is calling out for some red meat which is right up my alley. Not a big Cabernet guy but with wine like this I can change real quick like. |

3/6/2024 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRJust picked multiple vintages up from a private party sale and had extra on the ‘01s so I pobega’d it. Fill was perfect on this bottle and the capsule spun with ease. Sank my corkscrew in and slowly pulled the cork up til, snap, the last 3/8” stayed in the neck because the worm wasn’t long enough. Grabbed the Durand worm and extracted the remainder which seriously only had 1/8” of wine stain in it. At 22 years in the bottle. |

2/20/2015 - River Rat Likes this wine: NRAfter 3 days open. Nose of cedar, tobacco, dark plum, some bell pepper and oak. Balanced palate toeing the line between black and red fruit but still pretty primary. Ample acidity and chewy tannins finish it off. Needs lots of time but in 10+ years this should put on quite show. |

2005 Rubicon Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Captain's ReserveNapa Valley more |
6/20/2010 - River Rat wrote: 90 pointsFriends opened this magnum after my '84 Rubicon mag was flawed. Showed like the young wine it is. Same musty nosy as the '84 but fresher. Dark color, medium/full bodied with some sweetness and acidity on the palate. Finish was medium length but full throttled. Still young but showing it will age well. Interesting to see not only the differences but similarities of two vastly separated vintages. |
