Nose/Floral - Dusty Funk, cherry, old, cedar, clearly a dusty
Sweet - butterscotch and honey
Nutty - dark, funky, almond?
Spicy - less
Earthy - anise, clove, cardamom? Dunno something crazy
Smoky - no
Woody - your grandmothers cedar paneled basement
Fruit - brighter despite the funk. Apple and apricot?
Color - bright gold
Palate - pleasant, easy, simple
Finish - but still has some nice funky staying power
Value - amazing
Overall - this is not something that’s going to knock your socks off, but for the price it’s absolutely incredible. Just a solid Standard across the plate dusty pour that appeals to everyone and that’s why I love it

Casual note as tasted at Blind Barbour, more delicious funky peanutty, but vibrant. Fruit/fig, oak, molasses, dark af for the age and low proof, but super complex. Finish is decent, but a weaker point. Nose and initial palate are the more interesting part. Low proof probably responsible for that.

Nose/Floral - smells more rye spice, oak, and not dusty or musty. Stings the nostrils. Clearly high ethanol.
Sweet - light vanilla? Honey
Nutty - almond. Bright.
Spicy - yeah just hot fire cinnamon
Earthy - white pepper
Smoky - maybe just a touch?
Woody - extremely tannic and astringent. Not ancient funky basement, very bright and persistent oak
Fruit - golden delicious apple
Color - amber
Palate - it’s hot. Oof. Middle of the tongue
Finish - goes on forever. Clearly the proof seems to help that.

Overall - it’s a bruiser. Delcious. Big. Oaky. Spicy. Do like

Score: 93/100, I can’t do this whole out of 10 thing with lower scores shit anymore
Whiskey Type: Rye
Proof: initial pour, searing, 125-130
Age: 8-10 years? Clearly has some age due to the amount of oak you get, but isn’t musty cedar at all
Producer: Willett
Exact bottle: kind of a guess, but green top. I do feel like it’s closer to some WFE high rye rye (not bourbon) characteristics. 8-10 year WFE rye pick. Could be HH? Could be MGP? Kinda stumped

Reveal: OF 150th B3
Thoughts: as this opens up more I get some banana funkiness that I don’t dig. That youth comes across a bit more too. Wouldn’t buy one personally

NDA Advent Calendar 2023 (Blind Samples); 12/3/2023-12/31/2023: December 5 Advent (Blind)

Nose/Floral - interesting. A little more musty perhaps? Little dusty?
Sweet - caramel, caramel, caramel
Nutty - walnut funk
Spicy - mild cinnamon on the exit
Earthy - black pepper. Tobacco,
Smoky - no
Woody - mild mild cedar on the palate, much more musty cedar basement wood paneling funk (in a good way) on the nose.
Fruit - fig and dessert/dates etc
Color - vibrant gold
Palate - dusty I’m pretty sure. Persistent
Proof - seems waaaay lower than the jet fuel I normally drink. 85-90ish?
Finish - the flavor stays with you but the intensity doesn’t. Lingers on the side of your mouth with some mild tannins.
Value - N/A blind sample
Overall - love it. One of my favorites parts about this advent is the dusty samples as I love them but am far less knowledgeable. A true treat :) such an enjoyable pour

Proof: 80-86, not as hot as the Eagle Rare control sample

Exact bottle: oh man I’m bad with dusties. Doesn’t strike me as that typical Turkey funk. Could be National Distillers as I get some similar notes that I’ve had from an Old Grand-dad 86 proofer. So I guess that’s my guess. Isn’t hot enough to be 114.

Reveal: OFBB 2020
Thoughts: I was convinced this was a dusty, it did have some of that funky. A mercurial pour, I went back and forth between loving it and being underwhelmed. Very different than the other OFBB I've had

Robust but of lighter aromas and flavors, like brown sugar and lightly charred wood. Despite the high proof still easy to drink, though tastes a bit young.

Very nice nose of old wood and light brown sugar. Light on the palate, but similar to the aromas. The overall flavor and mouthfeel reminds me of cognac.

Orange amber with high rye content at 18%. Nose has tinge of orange peel with very smooth entry and sweet mouthfeel leveraging dried candied cherry finishing medium with almost Cointreau-like finish. Its almost a cocktail in a glass very pleasant.

December 6 - Old Fo 150th

Nose/Floral - very floral, fruit, some ethanol
Sweet - see fruit
Nutty - almond
Spicy - see below
Earthy - some black pepper and cinnamon
Smoky - no
Woody - brighter pine notes, doesn’t taste like dank old cedar
Fruit - fruit transfers from the nose, Granny Smith apple, cherry,
Color - dark amber
Palate - feels cask strength. Just coming off 94 proof EC pick and this is hotter for sure.
Finish - nice, persistent.
Value - N/A blind sample
Overall - really nice. Dig the elegance and integration here. Very polished, palate coating. Nose makes me want to say Four Roses but palate says maybe something different. Oak profile doesn’t seem quite old enough. Delicious pour. 10ish years old. 110-120 proof. Bourbon with some rye spice in the mash? Nice by any standard, but not my favorite from the Advent calendar.

Drank by the pour at Relish in Raleigh
Bottle 5/120

Nose/Floral - just smells like oak
Sweet - dark chocolate?
Nutty - walnut. Dark
Spicy - cinnamon plus tannins from the oak
Earthy - tobacco and anise
Smoky - no
Woody - just all deep dark cedar. You can tell it’s ancient and a short barrel. So intense.
Fruit - apple and cherry
Color - the darkness
Palate - damn.
Finish - will haunt my dreams. Incredible. Last forever.
Value - pricey but worth it

Nice orange-amber color
Apples, vanilla, oak and citrus hits off the nose
Some bitterness followed by a medium belly burn followed by orange, vanilla, citrus.
This is lovely sipping bourbon. Not one for the feint of heart. Good stuff.

Nose is ethanol forward, stings, really just jumps out of the glass for 86 proof. +/- 4 years. Banana central and fruit forward, older cedar funk, musty. Really a thin mouthfeel up front, then sour oak in the middle. The winner of the dusty tasting, did enjoy, wouldn't spend $400+ on a bottle most likely.

Nose/Floral - The most cherry forward nose of all time
Sweet - yes especially up front. Cherry and candied orange. Light brown sugar.
Nutty - pecan cereal
Spicy - some cinnamon and heat from BP
Earthy - no
Smoky - no
Woody - bright fresh young cedar
Fruit - cherries and oranges
Color - dark for 4yo juice
Palate - sweet up front, cherries carry over, but the exit while persistent falls a little flat exposing some newer make notes
Value - not great. Good whiskey but overpriced
Overall - conflicted. It’s a nice pour. Punches above its weight class. Still comes across as a little young but very well refined. Enjoyable. Glad I have a bottle, but wouldn’t stock the cellar with it and it’s horribly overpriced IMO

Nose/Floral - nice dark cedar and cherry
Sweet - all candied cherry jolly rancher
Nutty - less
Spicy - mild cinnamon
Earthy - no
Smoky - no
Woody - deep dark cedar
Fruit - cherry focused. Clearly Old Forester
Color - golden
Palate - the lower proof makes it easy to drink. Oak up front the front then fades to fruit
Value - good for what I paid, but current secondary is double or triple what it should be
Overall - still an all time favorite
