Christmas dinner at Hertford. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
More raisiny sweet Christmas cake, with same notes as previously. Nice herbal dill pickles. Bits of earthiness seeping in already.

It was in 1994 when the Finetto brothers decided to assemble their idea of Valpolicella at Garbole in the Illasi Valley. Like with every new winery, part of the vineyards were purchased, while some grapes came from growers. They used popular grapes from Veneto such as Corvina and Rondinella, but also under-the-radar ones useful to create something unique. Even though it’s a blend of the same grapes, comes from the same region and uses the same production method, Heletto is not ‘technically’ Amarone. It could have DOCG status, but the brothers don’t really give a shit about Italian bureaucracy. They just want to make great wine.

A guest once requested a wine “that’s going to punch me in the face”. You can get punched in the face in numerous ways - by your boss, by the bouncer at the club, by Hasbullah. When I drink wine, I don’t want any punching to the face, to the liver or anywhere for that matter. But with Amarone and wines alike, I get the metaphor. Luckily, the Finetto brothers produce such balanced wine, you will romanticize this liver abuse and be coming back for more. Inky purple paints the glass, while the nose is marked by stewed fruits, dried violets & hibiscus, sprinkles of Christmas spices. The palate kicks in the door, offering a wonderful backbone of acidity that carries the fruit and engraving itself into the drinker’s mind as an avant-garde reference for Venetian wines. Splendido!

Xmas day dinner at Hertford. Screw-cap. Drank over 2+ hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Apperance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Long legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of grilled herbs, smoke, raisins, blackberries, black plums, dill pickles, sweet soy sauce. Developed.
On the palate, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (16%), smooth but very high tannins, very full bodied. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of black licorice, black cherries, black plums, raisin fruit cake, grilled herbs, dark spices, smoky integrated oak. Long finish.
Very good quality Amarone. High alcohol not obvious till after many sips. Drinking in a good place now. Definitely a Christmas wine.

Was told that this was one of the up and coming Amarone if not among the best. Can be considered as 'cult wine'. Very sweet, dried red fruits, aromatic and the scent of spices and jam, plum, prunes. Drank it together side by side with Fattoria Garbole Amarone Della Valpolicella Riserva Hatteso, it supposedly younger brother and probably 1/3 of the price of Garbole. And surprisingly the consensus was Hatteso instead. I suppose that it was more friendly and ready to drink now.

Tasted blind. Late night sip at Chateau Davyd. Aired in decanter for 1.5 hours already before I tasted.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, black core with ruby edge. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of black licorice, black cherries, blackberries, chocolatey earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), firm high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet black licorice, chocolate, black cherries, blackberries, black plums, sweet baking spices. Long finish.
Good quality. Apparently had raisins in the flavour profile earlier in the night before I tasted. Big wine with good dose of oak. Drinking well now with a good dose of air. Still can develop may be more earthy tones over the next 3-4 years.
50% Corvina, Corvinone Veronese, Rondinella; 50% other grapes.
Grapes left to dry for 20-30 days Amarone style.
