2012 Rhys Syrah Horseshoe Vineyard

Santa Cruz Mountains more

Opened right after dumping a 2010 Horseshoe (cork was mush; wine sour to the point of being undrinkable; I've also had terrible luck on my Rhys Chards with corks pushing out the capsules and wines badly oxidized). This one has a similar but less pronounced sourness than the 2010, which faded with air, turning into a nice savory N Rhone style Syrah, with just a bit too much tartness. Will drink my remaining bottle soon before it turns into the 2010.

A "bigger" wine than I expected. Still has some tannins to resolve so will wait a couple years on my last bottle, or make sure I have it with a ribeye like tonight!

Side by side with the 2011. Two hour decant. Both reflected their vintages well (11 more red-fruit, higher acid; 14 more ripe with darker fruit). All 5 tasters loved both, with preference to the 11 with dinner and the 14 for sipping by itself.
