Blame this on me for not drinking this earlier. LOVE Bedrock, one of the best QPRs out there. But this is on the decline. We have one more bottle and will drink and use for a beef burgundy later this week.

3/21/2023 - MK_Maxxable Does not like this wine: NR

This was was a loser for me..
Day 1:
Aroma: spicy and pronounced mint/camphor/cedar which was off putting.
Flavors: Heavy mint/eucalyptus flavors, tart and astringent to me. I found the wine to be thin, flat with a chalk like residue and a very short finish.

I was hopeful that Day 2 would be better but to no avail. No point in struggling through the rest of this bottle, so down the drain. Maybe this is a bum bottle, but why suffer when there are so many other delicious dN wines to enjoy !

2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary

Napa Valley more

This wine was drank with family on the 1st night we brought our newborn son home. I was holding this bottle for a special occasion because this specific bottle has a history of being a celebratory bottle with my family. The 1st time I had the 2012 40th Anniv was on my 1st vacation with my soon to be wife in 7/2014, when the wine was originally released. I immediately bought several bottles at this time to store in my Eurocave. The next bottle I drank was for my 40th birthday in 8/2015 and my 3rd bottle I drank was at our wedding on 5/29/2016. All were very enjoyable, a crowd pleaser, and very stereotypical Caymus.

I detailed my experiences with the 40th Anniv bottle because I want to make it clear that I'm not a Caymus hater, as I know Caymus has just as many haters as it does fans and its a very polarizing wine. This particular bottle was not nearly as enjoyable as my prior experiences. I decanted the wine for approximately 60 minutes prior to serving. The 92 rating is for the initial impression upon drinking, which was totally expected. It had a deep purple color and was heavily concentrated. It had very silky smooth tannins. Initially, it displayed flavors of dark cherry, chocolate and oak/vanilla. It was not a very deep or profound wine However, I had an opportunity to have a 2nd glass after approx 4 hours of air and the flavor had turned into a strong medicinal note, like a cherry Robitussin flavor and was almost undrinkable for my palate, which was totally unexpected. If I were to score this bottle on my final glass, it would plummet to an 88 rating.

It is very possible that my palate has changed over the years. The main reason why I chose this bottle on this night was more for the emotional connection to it and for that it served its purpose. I didn't want to open a wine to deeply analyze, as the night did not call for this type of bottle. However, I am glad that it is the last one I had in my cellar. I am not sure there are any great benefits to aging this wine for over a decade but may be I just caught it on a bad night. I would have a tough time justifying paying the current average Wine Searcher price for this bottle. There are many great bottles that show better that are in the $80 range, let alone at the $190 range.

I hope others that are fans of Caymus have a better experience with the wine than I did on this night.

9/11/2020 8:03:00 AM - Your experience is similar to my own. Not sure if I have changed or the wine but. . I really don't like this anymore and it used to be one that I really liked.

To me it quiclky turns into a medicinal sludge of cherry and vanilla. I can't drink it anymore and have donated the last few bottles i have to charities for auctions where they actually bring in quite a lot of money.

drinking right now like a stinky southern rhône, bret, dirt, cherry, raspberry, roasted meats. Very good as a PnP, but really needs a few hours or more of air. medium+ tannins, great length. very nice.

2016 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

I thought twice about opening this magnum bottle of 2016 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Cuvée Vieilles Vignes. However, it was a special night with my family in town, and it sure felt like a good excuse to celebrate with a great wine. This wine is 60% Grenache and then 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. A nice nose that suggests cut and half dried flowers, a good amount of clove, and plenty of stewed red berries—really a strikingly good nose. The taste profile includes excellent pomegranate flavor and plenty of very integrated smooth tannin. Honestly, this was delicious on the first taste and got better and better over an hour. This is a very elegant wine and understand from some professional reviews this 2016 vintage was the best ever for Domain du Grand Montmirail and the Cheron family who runs the vineyard. Truly a very impressive bottle of wine. Everyone at the table agreed this is a very elegant wine with a long mouthfeel and simply special. That made me feel good for sure. Some additional notes worth sharing is the fact that Gigondas is often considered the small-scale or cheaper version of the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I’d put this wine up with many of the bigger brothers any day. I saved a glass for the end of the evening and sipped it slowly by the fire. After such a great evening with family, I enjoyed the last glass quietly and could definitely taste the beautiful flavors of Provence—rosemary, sage, thyme, and lavender. I'm glad I opened this wine, and wholeheartedly recommend it.
