Quick notes while drinking with a friend. Opened and let slow ox for an hour. The color had some nice bricking. On the nose, dried red fruit, pomegranate, floral, baking spice, and mushrooms. No greenness of the 2011 vintage detected.

Palate: spice, med acidity, med tannins, and well balanced. Drinking beautifully right now.

Corked this in 55degree F cooler and came back to it 4 hours later after going to dinner, and it went dead. It became thin and lean. Didn’t give as much on the nose or palate. Experienced drinkers, what does this mean?

8/18/2023 10:07:00 PM - not sure if you drank it at 55/ after you returned, but I've found burgundies tend to close up a bit if consumed at cellar temp. I usually let mine warm up a bit, 60-65 to get more out of them. that said it is possible it oxidized. 4 hours is fast but I've seen it happen with older wines. 'vacc vin' is a cheap and handy way to slow oxidation. I use it to help slow oxidation if Im not going to consume the whole bottle.

Not sure what to think about this bottle. opens with a beautiful aroma of strawberry, cherry, spice, forest floor, clove. medium bodied with similar flavors, leading to a near nothing finish. Its there and its gone. The tannins seem to have resolved, but left nothing behind. Hoping this is an off bottle and not what to expect in my last 3 bottles.

3/25/2023 - ledocq Likes this wine: NR

If you are interested enough in California cabernets to drink Monte Bello, you probably know the 2020 growing season took place under a lot of smoke. Ridge's promo materials don't mention this much, and so, for science, I opened a .375 to see what's going on under the hood. Headline: I think we're okay.

After I popped the cork, my whole kitchen was flooded with the familiar rich, deep aroma of a young high end Bordeaux blend. The initial taste was (of course) ridiculously too young, astringent and potent, but actually relatively approachable, grading on a curve. It tasted on a par with the other MBs I've had, in other words, extremely well made.

The wine was open from 3 pm to 11 pm and the taste lengthened and deepened, the tannins generally speaking pretty smooth, except for one moment about 3 hours in where I thought I sensed some bitterness. The issue of course is when you're wondering "is there smoke here?" you're going to freak yourself out occasionally. So I asked my wife to give it a shot (she wasn't dialed in about the issue, so no preconceptions), and she said it was great -- just way too young.

So there we have it, for now. No idea how this develops, but the data point now is that things look pretty good. Like all Monte Bellos this needs to be buried for a decade or more, but the materials are excellent.

NIGHT TWO: We saved a half glass. It's smoothed out and the taste has lengthened considerably. Still no issues. Unless something happens in its development (and I know zero about smoke taint), I think this is going to be an excellent wine years from now. If you're still concerned, and you have one to spare, go ahead and crack it and report back. Otherwise, just bury these for a while. There is zero aesthetic reason to drink this right now.

I had this wine first last November and it was tight, but it felt like with some time it would improve. My next bottle of this was a disaster (I did not rate) as like almost all my other 2018's it went on lock down. So I was so excited to FINALLY have a 2018 Napa Cab that is coming back around. I have be reluctant to open too many '18's at all since they have all been so closed. However, this bottle was great! Deep and dark red and black fruits. Fine integrated tannins. And medium finish. This bottle gives me great hope for the rest of the 2018 vintage (of which I have a lot!).

Tart is a good descriptor for this wine. High acid but a very interesting floral characteristic. If tasted blind i might mistake it for left bank. I didn’t find it as tanic as others but did feel acid level was high. Drank with a ribeye on memorial day, wrapping up bottle on day 2. Nice wine, but you definitely need to like this more restrained old world style, this is not flamboyant fruit forward CA blend, more mineral, earth , acid with a gritty medium plus finish. Well made wine!

Good. Not great. I stand by my note from January, 2019. -- "I would be lying if I stated that this was a blockbuster of a vintage from Clos des Papes. It is not. Very earthy. Smooth in one-dimensional wrote someone below, and I would agree. I would also venture to guess that it is in its proper drinking window at this time. For those who know Clos des Papes, there really is not much point in mentioning the obvious characteristics other than to say it probably doesn't have a long life ahead, but certainly has a few more years with which one could lay it down."

I now only pick them up in standout vintages where they seem to excel. There is a smattering of 90 point wines across that range which is tough to swallow at $100+ a bottle. The more recent vintages have been landing in the 94, 95+ range but still pricey vs some at similar quality.

Heat damage. Maybe. (There's a mixed case of stuff I'm worried about that I'm tasting my way through.) But the wine is so incredibly well made it's also fighting back. Never had anything like that before - the symptom early in the night was a finish that was bitter, sort of a port-like addition to tannins that end with an ashy nuisance. Yet I'm still drinking it because the rest of the experience is so damned good. Three hours later, the finish has receded into pure sweetness -- it's resolved into something quite good (if maybe slightly advanced?). Clearly meant to last for years and years and with that Pomerol mystery intact. EDIT: Day two, it's like nothing bad ever happened to this wine. It didn't have the depth of the grand vin (I've only had the 2004 but it was a stop-people-in-the-street-and-tell-them kind of wine) but it's really darned good.

Let's be clear, this is an entry level CdP so comparisons should be more like how much better it is than a great Vacqueyras or similar, not how it compares to for exampe a 2010 Vieux Telegraph. Am awarding a 93 score mostly as compensation for some ill deserved poor marks previously delivered.

A very fine bottle, great aroma, rich and full bodied with huge fruit, ample acidity and still muscular tannins. Folding all around on my palate, very enjoyable.

Drinking perfectly now and I suspect will be the same for some years to come, bottoms up!

From a half. Having tasted this nearly three years back, and while in the entirely agreeable company of three other wines scored 92, 94, and 95 points, none of which I fully agreed with, scoring them 90, 92-93, and 92 respectively, and wanting to calibrate this assessment, I decided to pull the cork on this. Besides, it had been high on my 'check in on' list. :-).

I was not sure how this would show next to the other wines; it quickly set the pace. The bouquet and palate feature an interplay of coal, black earth, minerals, and ores, smoky sous-bois (smoldering hickory), and charred cork, wrapped in a perfectly ripe red, and especially purple and black berry suspension, indeed, an elixir. These essences were enhanced by fresh herbs, especially savory, rosemary, and thyme, dried desert fruits (fig and date in particular), and muddled thick petal flowers. All of these elements contributed to a luxurious, still, high-mountain lake finish of excellent length. Positively enthralling!!! With medium plus acid, deceptive, velvety, medium tannin (especially by CdP standards), and superb balance, this should evolve for quite a while, and last until 2032-2035+.

This, and other 2012 Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, continue to reinforce my assessment that this is an understated vintage, notable for its poise, most reminiscent of 2008, if lacking a touch of that vintage's power. 95-96.

Cork was saturated halfway up. I’m now officially troubled by occasional Rhys cork problems, now identified in two different vintages by me (13 is other), unexpected given commitment to quality from this producer. As for this wine, very good! More open for business than I expected, possibly due to evolution from cork, though others note this is drinking well right now. Light on its feet for a 15, medium bodied, juicy acidity, balanced fruit. Nice finish. Great bottle, but I won’t wait too long on my other given another taster mentioned a corked bottle. Bad timing as I got the fall offer this week, but we love Rhys and will probably go long again.

I broke my general rule for Calera Pinot : Hold as long as possible! Because these wines can develop with age into mystical experience.
This wine comes out of the gate green and tight, with stemmy licorice. Time in the glass brings forth some dramatic opening with very satisfying funky beast and smoked cherry notes. The mouthfeel is medium silk. I think this is a fabulous wine that hasn't come into its peak zone yet- which is 5 to 7 years out.

So I've been watching the comments on this wine for a while. I'm always fascinated when I see such a wide range in ratings. Even the pro reviews on this wine go from 87-93. Now that I've opened it I get why. This has an appealing nose of primary red fruit, vanilla and caramel. that big fruit profile continues on the pallet with juicy strawberry and cherry. while I agree it's lacking some acid it's not completely devoid of acid on the finish which does close with medium length of mouth coating fruit. What I do see lacking, especially at this price point is, mineral and general complexity. It's a pretty wine and very enjoyable to drink, but wines similar to this can be had at 1/2 the cost or less. Just a miss on this vintage as Rochioli is generally a high quality site. Drink now
