2000 Château Chasse-Spleen

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/18/2015 - Indybond Does not like this wine: 82 points

PnP. Initially nice, but, after 30 minutes, this completely fell apart and became a watery, diluted drink, which was unbelievable. We could not finish even half the bottle. After having yet another disappointing 2000 Bordeaux, I would say that the vintage did not live up to the hype after all.

12/19/2015 4:40:00 PM - Thank you for your interest and comments. My disappointing 2000 Bordeaux experience includes Leoville Poyferre, Pontet Canet, Maucaillou, Beau-Sejour Becot, L’Arrosee, Fonplegade, Grand Corbin-Despagne, Laroque, Haut Chaigneau and, of course, Chasse Spleen. On the other hand, Talbot was marvelous and Tour St Bonnet, Paloumey, Charmail, Moulin de Tricot and Cote de Baleau were satisfactory. I hope my 2000 CS was an off bottle as I have one more left. Thanks.

For me, consistent with my earlier disappointing experiences with Leoville Poyferre (97, 04 and 07) and in line with my modest expectations. The nose is good, but the palate does not offer much. To me, there were more similarities between this and the 2000 Terrey Gros Cailloux (fellow Saint Julien wine with a price tag of $30) than differences. Furthermore, I do not think that this wine will go anywhere as it appears to be already going on a downward slope. At $160, there could be few wines that have a worse QPR than this one. I would go with the 2000 Talbot (at $80) rather than this even at the same price every time. The only bright spot for me is that, now, I have one less Chateau to worry about.

My notes from 2014. This is a total rip-off at $90. I regret my purchases of two bottles to this day. It is agonizing to think of the huge differences it would have made had I spent the same or less dollars on decent vintages of Pichon Lalande (87 or 94) or Pichon Baron (07) instead. Prices (especially for wines) are set according to the perceived quality (and supply and demand, of course) that does not remotely reflect the actual quality on too many occasions.

As advertised. I just echo THOMASKEIL’s superb review for details. This is drinking so beautifully right now that I see no reason to wait. I am including this in my wish list.

2004 Château Figeac

Being a Figeac lover (88 was charming and 07 is good for the vintage), I could hardly find anything to like about this 2004 vintage. Austere (as ALION noted), grippy (as XAVIER AUERBACH described) and rough around the edges (as MACKER100 wrote). No wonder this was once selling for $60 (way below the average price for this venerable Chateau) on K&L and is now selling at around the same price on a Belgium site.

Seventh #sip of our Full Moon #Bordeaux Blend BBQ. Life sucks 😎.

Perfect smooth aromas of chocolate, espresso and mature fruit. Warm, soothing palate of liquorice and chocolate. Elegant tannins. Stunning finish that never seemed to finish! Pleased to have three more bottles in the cellar as we think this will sip well for another 5+ years.

We often wonder if Haut-Brion really is that much better?

2008 Château Calon-Ségur

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

Good, but a little simple (as WIHONG noted) and underwhelming for its brand value and hype. I have to say that at least this vintage is way overpriced at $75. After tasting its 07 and 08 vintages, I am beginning to wonder whether Calon Segur really is the third best Chateau in Saint-Estephe behind Cos d'Estournel and Montrose as perceived by the general public. At a minimum, this Chateau is definitely on my list of gravely overrated Bordeaux (headed by Leoville Poyferre and Pontet Canet).

10/29/2015 7:05:00 PM - Thanks for your comments. Actually, I did like it (87 is not a bad score for me as you may have noticed from my other reviews). However, I was alarmed when all other people at the table preferred much cheaper wines over this much more heralded one. Anyway, you might as well wait several years before trying this because it seemed still too young to me. After all, you have plenty of mature bottles ready to drink!

My second time drinking this. As an avid Talbot fan, I actually liked it. Clearly better than 2008. Young, but approachable. A good QPR. It will be interesting to watch how this evolves with time. 2011 Bordeaux may turn out to be a sleeper.

10/22/2015 4:58:00 PM - Thanks for your comments. Actually, at least for now, 2011 Talbot pales in comparison to its 2003 sibling which was rocking a couple of times for me last year. And, I saw your note that 2001 is even better than 2003. I envy you that you have bottles of 2001 left in your cellar while I have not been able to find any. It must be something. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to opening a 2000 soon.

Thin and not charming. In my opinion, each of 2002, 2004 and 2007 GL is much better than 2006 (2002 being the best among them). A big disappointment for this great Chateau which is one of my favorites.

What a disappointment! This bottle makes it 0 for 4 for this so-called Premier St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe (2000 & 2003 twice each). I am compelled to have a serious doubt in the St. Emilion Classification System which is supposed to be more accurate than its outdated counterpart in Medoc.
