2016 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Prephylloxera "La Vigna di Don Peppino" Calderara Sottana

Etna DOC Nerello Blend, Nerello Mascalese more

10/17/2018 - InternationalWineReport wrote: 96 points

Sourced from two parcels, in the midst of a larger vineyard of Calderara Sottana that have survived phylloxera, La Vigna di Don Peppino is the estates grand cru. These vines are over 130 years old and stand on their original rootstock. The wine is composed of 98% Nerello mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio and slowly opens to an array of pretty aromatics including red berries and dark cherries woven together with spices, fresh florals and herbs. On the palate this is simply gorgeous, balanced, silky and remarkably well structured. It continues to impress with its outstanding overall focus and concentration of flavor as it enters the long, precise finish. Overall, this 2016 La Vigna di Don Peppino is a tremendous, age-worthy wine from Marco de Grazia which should only become more compelling as it evolves.

10/18/2018 1:16:00 PM - Both very similar in quality. Here are my notes on the 2015:

The 2015 'Prephylloxera' is a simply brilliant showing in this vintage. This comes from two parcels in the midst of Calderara Sottana that have survived phylloxera, which are now 130 years old and stand on their original rootstock. This fantastic blend of 98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio demonstrates striking purity and finesse. The aromatics are gorgeous, with fresh red fruits and cassis which combine with floral, spices, wet stones and a touch of smoke all taking shape. On the palate this is beautifully textured and focused with remarkable overall balance. It remains fresh and inviting, as it continues to dazzle through the long finish. (Best 2020-3032)

The 2010 Chateau Haut-Gravet brings notes of black currants and dark plums along with roasted coffee, mint leaf and toasted oak. Tightly wound with a full juicy core of dark fruits and a long satisfying finish. Very Solid.

Offers lots of ripe bright fruit, raspberries, cherries and blackberries to name a few, then there's exotic spices, cured meats and incense layered on top. Lovely focus and balance with silky tannins and mouth-watering acidity leave you begging for more. Composed of 34% Merlot, 33% Sangiovese, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon which were picked by hand. Lots of potential here, I can even see this even meriting another point in time, but it needs to flesh out a bit for now. (Best 2015-2025)

The 2009 Lucente offers up a hefty dosage of fresh blackberries, black cherry, leather, sandalwood, licorice, mocha and even some spicy molasses notes. This is full-bodied with rich layers leading up to the beautiful long chewy finish. Composed of 75% Merlot an d 25% Sangiovese, this is the best Lucente I have had to date. (Best 2013-2022)

Opaque deep purple appearance. Delivering mixed black fruits, ripe plums, graphite, spices, toast, floral and subtle hints of mint leaf. This is full-bodied and very well structured, developing a beautiful fresh character after some exposure to air. The finish is mouth-coating and very long. There is no rush on this, it still could use a bit of time and your patience will be rewarded. The final blend is composed of 40% Malbec, 22% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot (Drink 2014-2023)

11/29/2012 11:35:00 AM - Drinking windows are a little tricky when you start thinking about them in reference to scores, but what I am referring to by the drink date is that I am recommending drinking the wine somewhere between 2014 and 2023 for you to have the best chance to drink the wine at its best stage. A wine will always evolve for better or worse with time, there is never a guarantee.

With this wine in particular I felt it was a bit rough around the edges at first and needed a fair amount of air to settle down. Thats why I recommend giving this some time in bottle to flesh out and soften up.

If you have a case I would recommend drinking one now and see what you think. If you love it, drink half the case in the short term and put the other half away for longer.

If you were wondering if our score will go from 92(now) to 95 in 2017, well the answer to that is probably not. There are a few components in our scoring system that allow us to take ageability into consideration.

    Hope this helps.

The rating is as on the night, not potential. A good friend shared this with me as a treat. For this reason it only had one hour to breathe before dinner. First impressions were bad - no nose, and very tight and tannic in the mouth. Drinking this was clearly infanticide. After an hour and the glass it began to open up and showed some of the classic Pichon style, but I never got the wow factor. What a shame I did not convince my friend to drink something of mine and leave his wine for 10 years…

Fantastic young wine. The nose was amazing with dark fruit and spices that kept me comming back again and again. The palate was deep with smooth tannins and some acid. Let breathe for 4 hors before bringing to Portovino in Montreal. This wine was far more impressive than the 2005 I tasted at Gambero Rosso event two weeks ago. Can't wait to try the 2006, I hear it's even better. 95 ponts.

11/28/2010 5:44:00 AM - Had my fourth bottle of this and the previous three have all been consistent of my 93 point score. However, this fourth bottle seemed to have a slight variation, and was more tannic than the previous three. Still a great wine and worthy of a 92 score, even with the slight variation.
