Chelti Saperavi 2008
A wine from Switzerland.
It has a sense of maturity, but still has a lot of fruit.
The lingering finish is a bit disappointing, perhaps because it has been 3 days since it was uncorked.
The wine has a 50/50 black/red fruit, a bit of mushroominess, high humidity, negative, not assertive and discreet but piercing.

Bought at a Tbilisi wine shop/bar for GEL 63 (+ 18% VAT; overall, about USD 25). Inky dark purple; rich, fragrant mature fruit nose--some blackberry, maybe some blueberry, more; layers of mature black fruit flavors, very good mouthfeel; good finish. Brought Left Bank Bdx to mind but a bit more earthy. Delicious--and the best GE red wine value I've tasted. Shared with a half dozen other wine aficionados around the table who agreed that it was an outstanding example of what GE can do these days. After trying more from this producer recently, I'd say Chelti is among the best in GE these days. My GE wine comments reflect tasting 40-50 recently over about a month both at home and in GE. Quality, age, price: Outstanding.

My first Saperavi Qvevri.
Better than I ever expected Georgian wine to be. This is not only good, this is astonishing.

Black red.
Nose is big with a strong 🍒 cherry component ringing all the Italian royal bells, however closing the doors for Sangiovese, but not completely for Nebbiolo. It's a combo of licorice-ripe.dark.fruits-cherry-herbs that keep us going.
In the mouth, this is a deep, amazing red wine. Not so easy to produce. Harsh tannic structure with a lively approach.

Reception tonight was my first ever of Saperavi. But what a ride! Amazing for a very young wine.

One more btl to go. Will wait for another 10 yrs before the next plop.

Praelum - Georgian Wines Trade Tasting (Praelum Wine Bistro): Fairly deep ruby with pinkish edges. Red floral, funky nut and cream nose. Bitey tannins on a medium body, with rose, black cherry and hay flavours. Very warm at the back

Praelum - Georgian Wines Trade Tasting (Praelum Wine Bistro): Pale orange, and starbright. Intense nose, of mandarin peel and ripe oranges, as if mixed with heavy cream. However, palate was lean and simple, although with a slight hint of the orange peels, otherwise little else. Overpromised, underdelivered

This is my first (and generally favorable) tasting experience with the Saperavi grape variety, endemic to The Republic of Georgia. The wine offers deep, dark purple color and a nose of fresh-picked blue/blackberry notes. Quite round, lush and full yet without the sugar and high alcohol content of a heavily extracted New World wine. While I expected something akin to zinfandel, I would put this varietal more in the neighborhood of a Barbera. I understand that Saperavi wines from Georgia have 50 plus years of aging potential, that seems like a moot point with this $12 wine which can be enjoyed quite young.

I bought this wine at a wine tasting, and otherwise probably would never have tried or bought it. It comes from a relatively unfamiliar (to me) wine growing region (the Kakheti region of Georgia) and is made from a varietal (Saperavi) that I was not familiar with. I bought a few bottles and put them in my cellar. I opened my first bottle tonight. This is really a lovely wine, with a beautiful ruby color in the glass and long legs. The nose was fruity and slightly okay, with smoke and dark chocolate aromas. The palate is full and opens with dark fruit, finishing with good grip from soft tannins. Overall this is an excellent wine and a good bargain for the price. I actually prefer it over many of the more mundane and usual offerings. If you see this wine in the wine shop, don't be afraid to give it a try.
