5/5/2024 - Janda_42 Likes this wine: 91 points

Decanted off moderate sediment and some “goop”

Eye: Mediun purple to medium red.

Nose: Toasty oak, plum, red fruit. Little meat and prune. Blood orange. Violets.

Palate: Quite dusty and vinous. Moderate acid and tannin. Reasonably drying. Very meaty. Cool mint. Blood orange. Earthy. As the wine airs it develops spicey and umami elements.

Finish: Lingering meatiness, earth, and blood orange.

Overall: It’s like drinking a steak. The wine needed about an hour to start hitting its stride.

Super oaky upon pop n pour. Quality was suspect. Night two brought the goods. Recommend waiting several years or else a long decant. Quite delicious.

So, I probably opened this well before I should have. That said... it's a remarkably great wine. Some professional reviewers have likened this to a cote Rotie. For me, its closest French analog is Cornas. It is much "bigger", riper, and more wild than Cote Rotie. But that does not mean bad in any way. It is complex, bold, decidedly speaking of quality Washington wine. And very syrah. Nose plum, blackberry, olive, grilled meat. Palate also ripe, but remarkably balanced - acid is there, if coated. Minerals there, though not like its old world counterparts. Intense fruit. Great structure. Tannins. Oak has integrated well. Not hot. Long, long finish. This is really serious New World syrah done right.

Explosive notes. Olives, cured meat, concentrated purple fruit, wet gravel, espresso bean, something floral and maybe a touch of pepper. Flavors follow on the palate with rich blackberry, blueberry, plum fruit, charcuterie board and a driving steak of acidity alongside a slate/wet rock minerality. Excellent length and drinking deliciously right now.

W lamb meatballs. Yummy dish and good combo. Very well made wine, yes light ish/medium body but it had some weight that is interesting. Good fruit, nice spice, some length. No reason to wait drinking this.

Rich and intense. Dark color. Black cherry, dark fruits with juniper and cedar on the finish. Still drinking with some youth. Can continue to hold or drink now.

Was really surprised - was expecting more power and extraction. But I have got very elegant wine with impeccable balance. Engaging nose full of ripe forest fruit, also red plums, balanced by spice and earthy, leather notes. Palate still bit shallow, but I reckon it will expand with further maturation. Spicy, earthy finish. I hope this wine will expand in a Burgundian fashion with age, then it will merit much higher score. Really liked that ethereal, finessed style.

Zero personality. Not bad, just generic. Would have been ok for 10, not 20.

A bit herbal with anise on the nose. Slow to open but very full bodied with a melange of red and black fruit. Plum, black cherry and some umami on the midpalate. Full bodied, round with a long Lucious finish

Very elegant, restrained, surprising wine. Initially a hint of Brett, but this was subsumed as the rest of the wine rose to the fore. Dark fruit character, complex and serious, a hint of sour cherry and charcoal. Very fine indeed.

Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.

Lovely nose of Parma violets, blood orange, a melange of mostly red fruits, Chinese five spice, and then smoky oak.

The palate is medium body, starting out with strawberries and raspberries, then more tart cranberry and red apples as the acidity kicks in. The oak and smoke overlay starts mid palate and is slightly disjointed on first opening as the fruit intensity is slightly overwhelmed by the smokiness. But as the wine settles down the fruit stretches out becomes deeper and slightly darker and the smokiness blends in and mellows.

My first Washington Syrah and I really enjoyed it. It’s much more in the Nothern Rhone style with a nod to burgundy. I would have liked a touch more fruit intensity and a touch less smokiness but I really appreciate a US wine with restraint and a lighter touch.

Supple, precise, and delicious. The '13 Cab Franc was delightful, brimming with red fruit flavors (plum and dark raspberry), tobacco, lead pencil (but lightly, not like a Cab Sauv) and wet rocks. Some floral characteristics that hung on through the finish. The tannins were fine, soft and sweet. Nothing over the top, everything nicely proportioned and drinking might fine right now. It will last a few more years but it's drinking so well right now I wouldn't wait. I have one more bottle left and I'll be popping it before year's end, I'm sure.

Smoky and complex Syrah from Washington state, feels quite alike its N. Rhone counterparts with 3% Viognier. Fermented with whole clusters, aged for 17 months in 4% new oak, laudable 13% abv. Deep ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of smoky meat, prunes in liquor, earth, hint pencil shavings, black pepper. Medium+ body, fresh and smoky black fruit flavours, peppery saline edges, fresh and high acidity driven, silky medium+ tannins.

Subdued nose of dark fruits and a bready note is either closed down or spoiled by poor stemware.

Palate is altogether different. Earthy, chalky dark cherries and blackberries. Pepper and meaty notes are secondary but integrated. Supremely elegant and evocative of the northern Rhône. Full-bodied and luscious, with gripping tannins and “fine” acidity through a lengthy finish.

1 hour decant. Inky garnet red color. Aromas of red and dark berries, black cherry, earthy spice and herb notes. Gorgeous ripe dark fruit, mocha, minerals and herbs. Tannins are plush and silky. A touch of acid leads to a long pleasant finish. Drinking well.

Day 1: First bottle corked so opened another one. Day 1 this is similar to the critics of this wine by many others. Not showing much and very ordinary. Some pepper, mild fruit and earth. A simple wine. Would not buy again. 87 points
Day 2: Opening up for business with white pepper, green olives, tar, dust, earth, stone, forest floor and blue currants. Medium plus finish and nice acidity. 92 points
Day 3: This was not very good. Faded and lost the fruit.
Recommendation: For the price not worth it. Result of a Crush Syrah is a better value and wine.
