2020 Brookfields Cabernet Sauvignon Ohiti Estate

Hawke's Bay more

10/10/2023 - graemeg wrote: NR

{screwcap, 13.5%} Blackish and ripe, but with an overwhelming sweetness to it, which eventually robs it of the necessary length and depth. Ripe red fruit with hint of blackcurrant, mostly coconut oak, but on the subtle end of the scale. Medium weight, but not quite savoury enough in the end to retain interest. No decant. Fruit forward. Tobacco, leather, pepper with nice tannin around the edges. Medium finish. Lovely!

A vivacious, aromatic palate and lively acidity, with delicate notes of pear, peach, honeysuckle and spice. Its dry style is offset by the sweet fruit and fresh, vibrant flavours.

Light, vibrant and fun red to enjoy in spring. Pepper notes with a sweet long lasting taste. Best paired with a charcoal beef dish. 8/10.

Gorgeous purity of blackberry fruit, black pepper, and very creamy French oak, which suggested American oak with its coconut notes. Beautiful balance, very dry, brilliant presence in the mouth. Ageing very well.

Superb Hawke's Bay Syrah from vines on a slope, near the Bridge Pa Triangle. Dark ruby, powerful room-filling aromas of berries and violets. Masses of succulent black fruit, boysenberry spectrum, perfectly ripe, strong and structured, fine beautifully knitted tannins, acidity and great length with developed vanilla, coconut and almost creamy oak finish. Does not need much of a decant at 11 years, drinking very well now. Bacchus amat colles!

Excellent, 13.5% alc. Amarone style, which ages well generally, and in this version from NZ which has been consistently great over years.
Colour: deep black berry
Bouquet: rich red and black fruits, black olives, sweet liquorice, coffee, cedar
Palate: as bouquet, rich primary fruits, dried herbs, ultra dry chalky finish. Long and clean finish too.

All Blacks vs. Lions (Auckland, NZ): Medium plus ruby in the glass.
Medium intensity nose of ripe blackberry, slight smoked meat, slight white pepper.
On the palate, dry, medium-bodied, medium alcohol (13%!), medium plus acid, medium tannins.

This is great - it's a restrained New-World Syrah with structure that could fit Northern Rhone!

This is an outstanding NZ Bordeaux not really appreciated around the country because its a relatively small vineyard and most do not spend $50 a bottle. However I discovered this vineyard on a biking trip many years ago and have purchased dozens of the years including their Pinot Gris which the ladies really enjoy. The Gold Label Cab Merlot is up there with the top Bordeaux's in NZ. 2013 was a superb vintage for the Gimblett Gravels so I have a number of bottles. This is the first and comes with lots of plum and tannins, and although a pleasure to drink already after some breathing, I expect the tannins will continue to soften so that another 5 - 8 years of cellaring will be rewarding. That's my plan.

Starting to mellow now with tannins softening. After breathing for a period, opens up into a very warm mouthful of fruit and a touch of chocolate on the nose. Very good value for money at $20. Brookfields has been a favourite vineyard for some time with their Gold Label cab/merlot being a mazing.

Sensational wine

From the website:

Tasting Note:
Intensely dark, the 2014 ‘Gold Label’ Cabernet / Merlot is a bold wine with generous black fruits. There is a mid palate manifestation of wild blackberry, integrated oak, cigar box, toast and mocha underpinned with firm natural tannins. The 2014 ‘Gold Label’ Cabernet / Merlot is the culmination of a long hot summer with dedication in both the vineyard and winery. It is only made in ideal vintage years; the 2014 vintage is an excellent addition to the labels dynasty. *(Limited Release)

Cellaring:
Approachable now with decanting - and will age for another 10+ years.

Food Pairing:
An ideal wine pairing with honey and rosemary glazed Lamb roast served with seasonal vegetables.
