Still young and unpolished. Dark berries, liquorice, herbal tones, tobacco and roast aromas. Consider waiting another 2 years to round the edges.

This wine is mainly characterized by black fruits probably as a result of an higher percentage of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend (there was serious coulure of the Grenache in 2017). The color is opaque black-red with a purple rim, with on nose and palate black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, licorice and beefstock. There are plenty of tannines, a refreshing acidity and good length. Te 15% alcohol is very well integrated.
The advantage of this Southern Rhône wine is that it is already irresistible young, while it can easily be kept for at least 5 years gaining in complexity.

2/12/2024 - La Bodega Baru Likes this wine: 90 points

Domaine la Soumade crafts exceptional southern Rhône wines, and their La Fleur de Confiance 2009 from Rasteau AOC is a testament to their expertise. Predominantly Grenache from old vines and a bit of Syrah, this wine offers a captivating experience.

A mature brick red rim indicates its well-aged nature. Aromatic layers of dark cherries, dried figs, cinnamon, cassis, subtle floral notes, and hints of crushed black pepper delight the nose. The palate features firm tannins that elegantly coat the tongue, balanced by a medium to high acidity that balances seamlessly the higher alcohol content, ensuring a smooth taste.

The finish is exquisite with notes of cacao and sweet licorice. This wine is undeniably food-friendly. My next tasting will involve pairing it with flavorsome dishes such as char-grilled lamb chops, rich venison, or a classic, deep-flavored boeuf bourguignon.

From my humble experiences tasting aged Grenache from the region of South France, I've come to prefer those within a 4-8year maturity period. This appears to be for me the optimal time to enjoy the grape's beautiful primary and tertiary expressions to the fullest.

Thank you @cavebb for this very carefully stored bottle.

70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, aged in used large 600l oak barrels (demi-muids). This bottle came across as less charming and with harder, not yet fully integrated, tannins than the previous one, maybe due to the aftereffects of a recent cold. Nevertheless a very good wine, strongly influenced by the Syrah with black fruits, licorice, road tarr, followed by a long fresh finish. The 14,5% alcohol is well integrated. Can de drunk with pleasure now but will probably improve over the next 3 to 5 years.

Deep red. Faint notes of gunpowder and manure in the nose at first. Prunes. Teak. Garrigue. Well integrated velvety tannin. Lavender. Venison.

It’s still young. Amazing.

It should develop even more tertiary aromas over the next 2-4 years.

6 bottles left. I feel lucky.

Dark red. Opaque? Clear White rim. At first strawberries and Dark fruits. Notes of lavender sets In. Dry mouthfeel with soft tannin. Medium-low acidity hides the abv well. It’s still young. Will probably open op in 2-3 years. Medium long finish. Prunes? Thyme. Basil.

Very pleasant. It’s both firm and friendly. I’m a great fan.

After more than 8 years still a vibrant, youthful wine, suitable for bon vivants. Its color is an extremely young, unevolved purple-red with a smell and taste of lush Grenache (70%) boosted by the full-bodied Syrah (20%) and Mourvèdre (10%), a mass of ripe tannins, a good acidity that prevents it from becoming tiring and a long finish. The 14,50% alcohol is well integrated. Alas my last bottle of this vintage. It is ready to drink, but will maintain this level over the next 5 years.
By the way: the consultant at this domain is Bordelais Stéphane Derenoncourt a guy not directly known for promoting “over the top”-wines.

A rather perplexing experience for me, because this bottle isn't meeting my expections. It is not shut down, but simply by far not as complex and intense as previous bottles. Is it going through a difficult stage or already in decline. Well, this isn't made for the long haul, but I would be surprised if it is already at the end of its optimal drinking window. Time will tell. 5/11/15/7.

A classic affordable blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre. Opaque dark red with an inch pour and a red raspberry aroma. Firmly drying tannin gives the wine a tight and grippy taste. Not lush or rich, but based on tasting older vintages, this is likely to develop with more bottle age.

Even one of the least wines of Domaine la Soumade pushes around wines costing over twice as much, here the Cuvee Prestige, a classic Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre blend for $20. Serving it with 6 other wines at meals, we kept coming back for more of this. Opaque dark purple, effusively aromatic, richly flavorful on mouth entry, and well structured by bright acidity and smooth but drying tannin. Finishes with a deliciously long blackberry and blueberry. Aging perfectly with years left to go.

Opaque black to the edge. Enticing aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Lushly silky and juicy entry in the mouth with superb concentration. Glides down the throat when swallowed. Nothing astringent or sour. Kept coming back to this for 5 days during the meals as the most delicious wine on the table. Overall, one of the greatest GSM blends made, with 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre.

Dark purple, delicious red raspberry and blackberry, smooth texture, and fine balance of structuring acidity and tannin. The antithesis of harsh, sour, and thin. A reliable sign of a great winery is that even its least wines are superb and are great ambassadors for their more expensive ones, which describes Domaine Soumade Prestige in spades. Outstanding among inexpensive Rhones.

This $21 least wine from Domaine Soumade played the role of Sylvester Stallone from the movie Rocky in our dinner featuring marinated, grilled, and herbed lamb chops - the clear overachiever that stood up against an armada of top wines from famous, expensive, or highly rated wineries, including Argiolas from Sardenia, Beaucastel from Chateauneuf du Pape, Pax from California, Artemis in McLaren Vale Australia, and Domain Vendemio in southern France. The Cuvee Prestige came from the wrong side of the tracks – the 2011 vintage versus much greater vintages like 2010 in France. By far the best this wine has ever tasted, with opaque black color, shining and delicious complementary spices including pepper, and knockout fruit, acid, and tannins. While not as great as the other wines, every time we went back to the Prestige we not only enjoyed it, but were amazed how close it was in quality to its "superiors".

One of the wines that demonstrated that Rasteau deserved being recognized as its own appellation versus just being another generic Cote Du Rhone Village wine. At 13 years old a faint brown tint has crept into the outer edge of the wine in the glass, but it remains a special cuvee of exceptional Grenache that has aged magnificently into a softer, more caressing, and complete wine that was also the top wine with a host of holiday foods.

Domaine Soumade is one of the few wineries that makes world class wines whose greatest wines are made from the Grenache grape. Opaque with an inch pour, with an outer ring of red. Rich and concentrated everywhere, from smell to finish. Dense and powerful, with delicious red raspberry fruit. Lushly textured and wonderfully integrated., but distinguished by vivid acidity and firm and drying tannin. And the Cuvee Confiance is just their mid level wine.

To make a wine this superb from a vintage where torrential rains at harvest washed out roads, spread mold and mildew, bloated the grapes, and thinned the wines, the winemaker almost literally had to be able to walk on water. Domaine Soumade not only made a drinkable no flaws wine, but a good candidate for the best Cuvee Confiance in the decade of 2000-2009. Black with almost no brick. A clean and fruity nose. Brightly fruity, mouthwatering acidity, smooth but still drying tannin, dense and deliciously enjoyable.

This 16 year old wine remains impressive but does show 2 signs of its age - a brown tone in the color plus a wider ruby edge around the glass. That said, the wine has an impressively fruity raspberry and blackberry, still firm tannin, and refreshing acidity. Overall, very juicy and delicious, and delightful with food, especially lamb.

A rare and excellent French Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rhone River Valley in France, costing only $9, that stood up in quality to a blind tasting of 5 other wines from Bordeaux that were more expensive and famous, paired with 6 wines made from Bordeaux grapes somewhat other than France, variously from Italy, California, and Washington. Grown in the Orange part of the Rhone amid a sea of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. When released, this pitch black wine had tannins hard as nails that at 11 years old have become rounded and well integrated, giving the wine more texture and finally releasing black currant and blackberry fruit. Plum, leather, and violets in the nose, silk and power in the mouth, and a finish that is firmly dry. Domaine Soumade is one of the best estates in the world, making some of the greatest Grenache, where every other wine they make is superb.

Time has been kind to this one. Tough and dense in its youth, I had little hope, but stuck a couple of bottles away to check on its progress. Now, ten years out from vintage, it's actually coming around. Softening slightly, showing some dark fruit but no longer so rough and rustic. My last bottle, but honestly I think another few years might help it. Pleasant weeknight wine that paired well with beef Stroganoff.

A good value. 80% grenache, the rest syrah and mourvedre. Not a great wine but this is La Soumade's entry level wine. Definitely a crowd pleaser, on the full-bodied side, well balanced. Lots of dark cherry fruit, some garrigue, meat and cedar flavors. Has aged well, I bought it four years ago for about 10 Euros. An excellent value. Wouldn't complain if it was served at a wedding.

Dark damask red.
Nose: liquorice, white pepper, suitcase leather, occasional hints of overripe stonefruit.
Medium-full, a little dry (tannic), sloe fruit.
Decent length.
Rather lacklustre and short on charm
