4/16/2024 - sfwinelover1 Likes this wine: 95 pointsSo rarely happens, but always fun to write a first TN. Brought to lunch at Rutherford Grill by Kelsey, representing IE, this wine was bottled but not released (the lettering on the bottle looked handdrawn, which made me assume final bottles hadn’t been prepared, but perhaps this is how the final bottles look?). This was a PnP, which did this wine, big and vibrant in all ways other than acidity (fruit, mostly black, tannins, oak, vanilla, secondary notes like forest floor and exotic spice) no favors. Like its 2006 tablemate, this is a delicious wine, but unlike that bottle, which was integrated to the point of verging on softness, this was downright fractious. Although this wine is from Sonoma, it definitely seems to me to have more in common with its Napa brethren than Verite, Laurel Glen, Arrowood Reserve Especiales, etc. (probably because it’s Melka, I think, the same as Kamen being Herrold, I think). While I’m not quite sure where this goes with air and/or bottle age, there seems to be lots potential here, even if, for me, at the $300+ price tag I understood it to be, it seemed a bit of a stretch. Like the HR, it was a complete mismatch with the Tuna salad, but there’s enough structure to think it likely to be a pretty good food wine, although it may still be best as a cocktail wine. It’s a bit soon to give this a definitive score, but I think it will settle in the 94-96+ vicinity. Thanks to Kelsey and J for arranging. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

3/4/2024 - Charlie C Likes this wine: 94 pointsDark raspberry red edge to edge. Plum, raspberry, black cherry aromas. Rich and intense on the palate, blackberry, cherries, dark chocolate, hint of oak and tobacco. Gets brighter with some air. Smooth but pronounced tannins, great acidity and balance. Finishes long with dark fruits and semi-sweet chocolate. Beautiful wine, but it will be better with 3 to 4 years of development. Drink next 10 to 15 years. Decant this for at least 2 hours if you drink it in the near term. 94 points with an upside. |

2/13/2024 - Yack Man Likes this wine: 93 pointsConsistent with my previous notes, a release that has turned out to be very solid. Dark and maturing berry fruits, black blueberry, dark currants with a hint of leather. Although I purchased a good amount at a great price, I wish I had more of this one. 93+ Points. 2/5/2024 - F_&_M Likes this wine: 93 pointsBoy, there's a lot to unpack here. Other reviews echo my feelings. Deep, dense and dark. Drinks like a huge Bordeaux. M. said the nose is strong with new oak. To me it's more like steminess or a bit of green pepper. Overall very interesting to drink now, but definitely needs more time. It's my first bottle of this label, and I'm a fan. |

1/4/2024 - msf6msf6 Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis is a wine for big Napa cab lovers, despite the fact that's its from Sonoma. All the previous notes were very accurate, though I wish I would have remembered to give it more air. The first sip right out of the bottle was good but after an hour of air in the decanter, it was immensely better. I have recently gone with less decanting time for most of my wines but this is one that needs probably 1.5-2 hours to really get going. By the time we finished the wine after 2 hours in the decanter, it was still improving. Flavor profile is not quite as complex as you would like for $300 but if you like big Cabs, this one is for you. |

10/16/2023 - WineBurrowingWombat Likes this wine: 97 pointsCracking the whip; 10/16/2023-10/23/2023 (Eagan, MN): N: Bursting on the nose with dark flowers, matching colored fruits, dark earth, spiced and dark tree bark, and a touch of incense. Some generous chocolate that appears then gradually integrates into the rest of the aromas. A bit of anise adds to the complexity. The nose is ridiculous. It's as if the earth was damp from over saturation of fruit instead of morning dew. |

9/23/2023 - I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine Likes this wine: 96 pointsWOW! This is what I love in a wine! Hitting on all cylinders for my palate! Plus, if the fruit holds up (and no reason whatsoever to think it won't), and the tertiary characters become more pronounced, this could easily flirt with perfection! |
