8 different clones, but 50% Swan Clone (which seems high but Ken really likes how it presents and says it's different from various places in the vineyard). 16 months 50% French Oak (versus the single barrel of 100% slow toast french oak). Still has typical strawberry and cherry fruits.

A nice follow-on to the 2018 cab. The vines were planted in 2015 on the Mahoney Ranch. Full bodied with blue/black fruit (blueberry, blackberry, currant) with a little forest floor earthiness.

2021 Mahoney Vineyards Pinot Noir Single Barrel Eric Millard Las Brisas Vineyard

Dijon 667 and Swan from Block 1 (Northwest Corner). Plantings are tight Dijon between Swan and the established Swan makes it hard for Dijon so the fruit berries and clusters are really small. Red fruit (strawberry, cherry and raspberry). Barrel brings out plum and cherry on the darker side.
This is an interesting experiment with a single barrel that was long and slow, so while medium toast, it is much milder. From Eric Millard who studied in Beaune and then worked at Franois Freres and then Latour Cooperage (nearly 30 years). He makes his own barrels - 5 per day, by hand, working with his daughter. Wood is from Jupilles and Western Loire forests. The barrel was toasted for 4.5 hours (most barrels toast in 1 hour) and custom water pans to bring hydration in during toasting and a metal sarcophagus to allow off-gassing in the back half of the barrel. The result is a very gentle oak that does not over power the fruit. While it is medium toast, it is not darker than caramel colored so appears more like a light toast, but has tons of complexity.

This got better as the bottle sat a little. But I need to remember that these wines are not meant for longer aging. This bottle was a little 'sharp'.

Drywhite wine. Tastes a bit like a dry sauvignon blanc. Straw-like taste wih a touch of melon. Ok but not great.

These are great reliable Pinot values. I would not hold these longer. They are ready to drink and a good representation of Carneros Pinot.

This seems to have lost some of the body I normally expect from the estate label. It was fine, but felt thin.

My last bottle and the best of the bunch. Fully integrated and smooth on the palate, some gentle spice, tart cherries and a hint of earthiness. Went well with Chinese food.

This is drinking nicely and still has fruit and body. It's probably the right age for drinking, Francis and Ken don't make this wine to age for a long time. I really had to fight the cork on this one (not natural) and the bottle has a different top edge, so it took some work to break it free. But that's their thing - they haven't used cork corks in ages and it doesn't hurt the wine :).

I'm not crazy about Carneros PN. Many strike me as a bit stemmy even while they show ripe red fruit. This one has a bit too much oak influence for my taste and finishes sweet. Okay but not my kind of pinot.
