Initial aroma of molasses, opening up to a sharp nose of blackberry with a keen edge of graphite and a hint of thyme.

Palate of cherry and leather up front with a bright line of acidity leading to grippy tannins and notes of strawberry and licorice on the middle. Lasting finish with notes of vanilla and tobacco.

Earthly nose on the undergrowth.

Massive on the palate, the fruit has disappeared for flavors of tobacco, undergrowth and earth. We are definitely in tertiary aromas where earth largely dominates. The acidity still balances the wine but it is time to drink it, because the juice began to oxidize significantly at the end of tasting. Good peppery finish.

If the 1998 seduced me on 3 successive bottles drunk a year apart each in recent years, and this, without showing any sign of fatigue, what about 1999?

I have 3 bottles from 1999, I have one bottle left from 1998. Last time I drunk the 1999 it was in 2020.

Opening of the 1st bottle of 1999: obligatory bimetallic strip, pegged and very dry cork. The wine is vinegary, acidic, undrinkable.

Second bottle: same observation, horrible smell of vinegar

3rd bottle: More engaging nose with discreet fruit and lots of spices. Dense mouth but which quickly becomes fluid, the structure withers and the vinegar arrives to dominate a juice which is thin 2 hours after opening.

Not all wines are designed for aging for 24 years. If the 1998 from the same cuvée never disappointed me, I wouldn't hang around drinking it.

A nice exercise in humility too because I had written in 2020: “a wine at the start of its life”. It is clear that in 2023 his life is behind him.

3rd bottle drunk, the last in 2022.

Always the same juicy bottom with a beautiful maturity and aromas of tobacco. Spicy and full finish. On the other hand, the cork is starting to show signs of weakness.

Deep and rich ruby to purple color- evidenced further by the staining of my teeth after consumption…
Tight upon opening, but nicely showed deep plum and dark berries after decanting. Not overly complex fruit. Viscous and thick in typical style. Higher on acid, but a young wine at the moment. Probably will drink well for a few years to come.

From memory: For me the wine was too tannic und still substantially unbalanced. Possibly way too young. "Gros Rouge qui tache"

Warm. Pauillac like nose. Cassis. Tannins yet not fully integrated but already well drinkable.
Plums on the palate and sandalwood.

Bright ruby color with a garnet rim. Aromas and flavors of cooked dark cherry, red currant, vanilla, tobacco and bakers chocolate. Very pleasant herbal quality on the long and earthy finish. Full bodied. Well balanced and harmonious. Big and powerful. Solid.

Naso piuttosto esplosivo, dopo quattro anni di invecchiamento. Le note tropicali sono quelle più sorprendenti, assieme a pietra focaia, salvia e sentori dolci, quasi vanigliati. Il sorso è divertente, fresco, sapido, giovanile ed energico. Se proprio dobbiamo trovare un piccolo difetto non è lunghissimo, ma davvero bottiglia eccellente

Spicy nose, undergrowth and black fruits intermingle.

3rd bottle of this wine that I particularly appreciate.

The mouth is juicy and deep. This bottle has a bright fruit, it appears less evolved than the 2 others with always this blood background however. Balanced, with an acidity and a juice that respond to each other with harmony, the complexity of the aromas is revealed with aeration with sweet spices that dominate on a tobacco background. Great finish on the leather with pleasant tannins that open up to a nice length.

Confirmation that this wine is excellent and far from tired.

Was not impressed on day 1 as it seemed oxidized, musty. A deep gold color. But then, wow day 2 was much better and still had more to show on day 3 — muted cooked stone fruit, honey, nutty flavor with a saline backbone. An Italian trebbiano that wants to be a Cognac like its French cousins but got stuck at the wine stage. Great with cheese and would be a knockout with Gorgonzola.
