Sour cherry after aerating. Decanted and towards the end of the bottle it only improved slightly. I've had other bottles (same vintage) that were not as sour. Stored properly.

2021 Migration (Duckhorn Vineyards) Syrah

Sta. Rita Hills more

3/29/2024 - WindFlyer wrote: 88 points

dark and opaque purplish ruby in the glass and medium plus body. dark brambly fruit with whiffs of black olives, dried green herbs and pepper on the nose. the fruit note carries on to the mouth where it is laced with and agreeable earthiness and a not-so-agreeable vanilla sweetness that isn't fully counterweighted by the tart plum juice. good acidic lift, firm but polished tannins, and moderate length round out the experience.

appellation-level Syrah that is open for business and should drink well for a couple of years.

13.9% AbV; from two (unspecified) vineyards; fifteen months' ageing in French oak (42% new).

third visit to this wine in eighteen months… i wrote initially:

"the nose has black-and blueberries, whiffs of thyme and toast, and just touches of rocky earthiness. in the mouth the fruit flavours tend to run red, with more acidic cranberry and pomegranate at the fore; earthy and woody notes provide a counterpoint. some surprising sweet spice and savoury flavours come thru on the very long finish. feels mostly fully developed, with soft and integrated tannins, and poised to drink well for another handful of years."

it has darkened a bit since, the vanilla note is a bit more prominent, and it continues to drink well. seems to have the legs for another five or so years.

dark purplish ruby colour and medium body. black and blue berries feature prominently on a nose accented with herbal notes and a whiff of lavender. the fleshy fruit in the mouth is laced with earthy notes, a tad of wood sweetness, and hints of pepper spice, while framed by fresh acidity and soft tannins. moderate length.

somewhat bold but not "fruity" style of Pinot Noir that has good complexity. drinking well now and perhaps with a bit more room for development.

pale straw and quasi-medium body. vanilla and cream in the nose accentuate the feeling of ripeness to the pineapple, apple, and tropical fruit aromas. there is a similar effect in mouth on the ripe pear and apple flavours; there is some acidic lift while there are confectionary accents of bubblegum to the vanilla. creamy texture thru the moderate length.

creamy Chardonnay that stops short of an overly buttery style and has enough acidity to avoid heaviness. it should please those who like this style… just bottled, so could use a bit of laying down to settle in and show a tad of complexity.

light ruby colour and quasi medium body in the glass. quiet nose of sappy strawberry and raspberry with a dusting of cinnamon and clove. brightly acidic in the mouth and with a gentle and clear precision to the cherry and blackberry fruit, spice accents grow in the midpalate over gentle tannins. some vanilla notes appear into the moderate finish.

a pinot with a light touch that while being fruit forward is not jammy… there is some complexity hiding behind the primary juice which should come out with another year or two of bottle age (so some upside potential there). that said, there is structure enough for the mid-term only.

greenish dark straw colour with fine bead and mousse. green apple and lemon dominate a nose generally devoid of yeasty notes. very smooth, round and bright in mouth, the green apple flavours are enriched with melon, lime zest, and a hint of vanilla… but the story here is the freshness without tartness that runs the length and into the moderate-plus length.

this would be an excellent Blanc de Blancs with a bit more complexity. as is, it's quite enjoyable and even if dosed at extra-brut levels, its taste profile is squarely on the Brut level.

coppery salmon colour in the glass with fine bead and mousse. strawberry and cantaloupe mingle with citric whiffs in an attractive nose. the melon flavours mix with red apple in the mouth with good acidic lift; no evident yeastiness, instead the influence of the lees translates to a creamy texture. moderate length.

agreeable sparkler that is eminently quaffable that in this iteration seems a tad short on complexity. just-right dosage for sweet/tartness balance.

12.5% AbV; 6 g/L dosage; blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier (no proportions listed); twenty-eight months on the lees.

not so different from a couple of months ago…

…except this time i got to drink the wine as it warmed, which produced slightly richer notes notes in the mouth with a subtle sweetness and a mellowing of the acidity. this was enjoyable.

however, the alcohol also became more noticeable, which was not enjoyable.

Drank one of these with a zucchini pasta dish. I pick up more cranberry and cola aromas and flavors. Has a nice “spiciness” to it. It’s definitely dribkable now. Likely will not improve further. QPR…. Debatable. I’ve had better for less. Migration has better offerings.

Clear medium ruby appearance.

Clean, pronounced but simple aroma dominated by candied black fruits and a small amount of medicinal "band aid". No additional secondary or tertiary notes are present.

Dry with medium minus acidity with medium body and alcohol on the palate. Medium tannin levels, which are overall very round and not at all grippy. Medium plus flavor intensity with flavor characteristics containing a very polished integration of dark fruit. I personally have trouble tasting any particular fruit and am struck by the upfront presence of candy and jam. Medium, layered finish with some secondary elements finally emerging at the conclusion as vanilla and very minimal coffee.

Conclusion: Good quality wine. balance complicated with some.overpowering candied fruit notes present in nose and palate. Layered finish with some secondary elements of vanilla and coffee emerging. Intensity again somewhat dominated coagulating jammy notes. No real complexity.

Consumed over 72 hours, no appreciable change with refrigeration and vacu vin.

Not what I was expecting. More reminiscent of a New Zealand Pinot (Otega) then Santa Barbara. Surprisingly dark fruit and candy dominated in geography presumably embattled by Pacific fog. My tasting is way off the tech note provided by duck Horn, so maybe I swered this one up :)

Given the price, I would skip this.

Duckhorn Portfolio tasting: beautiful ruby colour in the glass. some dusty herbal notes escape from the glass ahead of the dark berry aromas that are laced with subtle spice and earthy notes. medium-bodied in the mouth, it is very soft on the entry, with the dark cherry fruit flavour gaining in intensity (if not brightness) as it travels. rhubarb, cranberry, spice, mineral and mushroom notes play against each other to a fairly lengthy finish. tannins are polished and fully integrated.

this wine was the most complete of this mini-vertical. it is delightfully complex, shows very good concentration, and is quite likely at its peak. should drink well for a couple more years.

there is no reason to change any of that… i would only add that it is remarkable similar to the 2018's profile, except for being just a little bit less concentrated and less mineral.

Duckhorn Portfolio tasting: lighter ruby colour. the nose leads with earthy notes that darken the cherry and blood orange aromas; subtle herbal and spicy whiffs provide some lift. lighter-bodied and textures in the entry, there's a sense of transparency to the fruit attack. bright accents from pomegranate and rhubarb notes and depth from some woody and mineral ones enrich the mid palate and carry to a moderately long finish. tannins are quite soft and fairly integrated.

a somewhat cooler vintage's influence is noticeable in this wine, and it is a treat for those who enjoy a lighter style of pinot. while i do see some upside potential for this wine, i do wonder if there is enough structure there for further development.

Duckhorn Portfolio tasting: pale straw with greenish overtones and light of body, it has aromas of fresh white and yellow peaches. lime, and touches of coriander. the freshness continues in the mouth, with a notable acidic vein permeating the green apple, starfruit and gooseberry fruit notes. mild spice accents lead to a moderately long if a bit astringent finish.

dry, straightforward and somewhat linear… and a bit too alcoholic for those attributes.
