Juicy and better with hard/powerful cheeses than brie et al

Still youthful, acidity softened a lot, definitely needs decanting to avoid the unfiltered stuff

Pale

Surprising amount of sediment, even for unfiltered offering, with first two and last glasses affected.

Light bodied, possibly more alcohol than posted 12%abv, but cheerful and approachable

2015 Savage Grace Wines Syrah Les Collines Vineyard

Walla Walla Valley more

10/27/2023 - Sanfoan Likes this wine: NR

I felt like a PNW (cool-ish) Syrah and so I pulled this out of the cellar. My last Les Collines Syrah from Savage Grace and one of only a handful Les Collines Syrah’s left in my cellar from my time in Washington State. This has evolved quite nicely, for my palate. In the glass, the wine still has a somewhat purple hue to it. It’s still quite deep but it shows signs of aging with a slight garnet as you approach the rim. On the nose, there isn’t a whole lot of fruit, more savory along the lines of tar and herbs. Some sage, some peppercorns, maybe a hint of licorice, some faint red fruits, as well as some well-done bacon (ultra-crispy, on the verge of being burnt, if that makes sense).

On the palate, red berries, some PNW cherries, bacon (lots!), tar, peppercorn, savory herbs, and some flint (maybe?). To me, this has evolved nicely although there still isn’t a whole lot of tertiary development. There is still a bit of astringency that doesn’t seem to want to go away. No oak that I can recognize (which makes sense, since I seem to remember Michael using only neutral oak, with maybe a very small percent of new or slightly used barrels on this). I don’t know how to describe it but it has such the Savage Grace house style – I love it! Medium body. Medium plus acidity. Medium plus length. Overall, an excellent wine.

Domestic Syrah clocking in at 13% abv.
Noted on Day 2 out of an Oregon Pinot glass - because I felt the aromatic lift would be nice and suit the wine.
Definitely better on Day 2 out of this glass. Aromas of slightly charred grilled meat, macerated blackberries, and hoisin sauce.
Medium bodied, moderately fine tannins that carry all the way through the finish alongside the balanced acid.
Round in the mouth, soft entry, long finish, a very well balanced wine that feels complete and composed at this point.
The palate is deeply flavored without being extracted. The intensity for 13% alcohol is impressive. There’s pervasive dark fruits, a melange of herbal notes, and some baking spices that segue back to baked blackberries.
Just a fantastic wine.
Hold for now and revisit in 2024 or 2025.

Appealing light body, very easy drinking, bottle obviously too small (should have been a litre:))

Feels enough acidity to hold fora few years yet

Huge acidity.

The syrah influence has dissipated over the last 18 months, zweigelt and pinot fruit and bite are dominant

Works with pasta and a variety of cheeses

Another fantastic wine from Savage Grace.
Still on the young side with its best days ahead. Composed and delightful showing of pretty fruit and savory herbs. All delivered with balance and poise- nice structure and acid keeping everything fresh.
Hold until at least 2024 or decant vigorously to open it up.

My contribution to a blind rose tasting. Though not a trace of pink in this vintage (a prior one had a very slight blush), I hung my hat on the fact that it's not red though made from 100% red wine grapes and therefore qualified to be here. As is generally the case with Michael Savage's whites, this is only just coming together at 4 years out. Good fruit with white pepper and a touch of herb.

This is a real stunner and I would use it interchangeably with a white blend when pairing with food. It starts with a nice herbal quality on the nose. There is some good acidity, with a bit of lemon and custard. I had a nice chat with Michael last September when he was crushing the grapes for the 22 vintage. These same grapes are used to make his Cru Carbonic.

Ruby rather than purple. No nose to speak of. Taste is very full of red fruit, red cherries, apple peel, plum and very light tannin but really solid acids balancing the sweetness of the fruit. Very enjoyable
