2008 Dain Wines Pinot Noir La Belle Petite Gap's Crown Split Rock

Sonoma Coast more

This is a situation where I wished the palate could have lived up to the nose. Classic Sonoma Coast fruits, with lovely floral note that suggested a luscious and velvety mouthfeel. The palate was quite nice—forest floor mixed with your general cherry and raspberry, but it never seemed to really hit an incredible stride. Something on the palate just felt a little short. Very well-made and balanced, from a great producer. I think with some additional age this could start to show a bit more flair and depth. It won't disappoint now, but doesn't overwhelmingly excite.

2007 St. Innocent Pinot Gris Vitae Springs Vineyard

It had a bit of a tingle-like texture on the tongue at first, and finally it died off. It wasn't the kind that felt-related to acid; it more felt like an unstable wine. Quite basic and one-dimensional, with just a few primary fruit flavors of apples and pears. Definitely did not develop any sort of minerality or herbal notes. Not a lot wrong with the wine, but quite boring. I'll save my remaining bottles for guests that just want a simple white with an ice cube.

UPDATE: I put some back in the bottle from the decanter to get air over the entire night. TOTALLY different wine today. It is not over-oxidized at all. It's now presenting as clearly Oregon: wet leaves and dried herbs on the nose. Even a touch of watermelon rind. Palate has picked up some black and red fruit. Rhubarb is sticking out, along with an under-ripe blackberry and a creamy raspberry. Along with more raspberry. And more, again. It has an impression of being really brambly. The wine has softened, and the Pommard tighness has slipped into a velvety tannin with juicy acid. Still incredly full, but approachable as a dense Pommard clone Pinot with character. TAKEAWAY: drink one glass and then decant the rest over the *entire* night (put a napkin over the top to keep out bugs and dust). Re-bottle in in the morning, and then put back into the decanter at dinner time. Do not try to drink this without preparing it a day before..not at this point in its life. You'll enjoy it if you do this...if you cant put in the time to get it ready, then dont bother with the 08 for at least three-five more years at minimum.

For what's currently showing, it's well-balanced and well-made. Frankly, though, it's entirely shut down. After and 1+ hour of decanting we were beginning to get a few floral notes (rose petals mostly) and by the end of the night finally getting a little bit of fruit. For a novice, they might not taste this as Pinot Noir. It's quite grippy and big on the palate. This makes sense, as it's made entirely from the Pommard clone. Impression at the end of the night (and all 08 Ken Wrights that I've opened) is that it needs to be but away for 5-10 years. Not a very encouraging statement...I know. The wine will be there; it's just not there yet.
