Final of three bottles. A bit muted on first evening, even with a 4 hour decant. Still pretty tannic, with dark fruits. Improved overnight while in the decanter measurably—really opened up and became more interesting. 90 on night one and 92 on night two: so 91 overall.

I enjoyed this—reminded me of some Priorats that I like. Dark red fruited, concentrated but still polished.

Always interesting to try a varietal like this when it’s on its own and not in a blend. And I really have enjoyed some other Chiron Grenaches.

This one is interesting—much lighter than you’d expect, with a delicacy that I wasn’t expecting. It was almost like a spicy Pinot Noir. Really nice, and I’ll hold on to the other two bottles to see how they develop.

Really nice. Leans CA with more fruit than savory notes, but with enough acidity to make it food friendly.

Really interesting on the nose, but palate didn’t deliver. Thin and nothing special, unfortunately. Very un-WS to me.

Definitely showing some development from the previous bottles I drank in 2021. A little less acidity and less primary than before, with some bacon fat. Really good QPR as always.

This is my fourth of six bottles and has been almost exactly a year since the last one. Continues to develop spectacularly—waves of red fruit, still pretty tannic with a lot of life left. Simply delicious.

Very light ruby, translucent to the rim. Light, pretty wine with bright red fruits—cranberry, strawberry, cherry. Great acidity and good with food. Always enjoy trying some of these single-varietal wines that are usually part of Rhône blends. This is a more delicate version of the CA Grenache-only wines I’ve had. Really nice.

I liked this, but not as much as Halcon’s Mourvèdre. It’s got some of the same fruit and spice, but lacks the acidity and depth of the Halcón.

Really, really good. Just explodes in the glass…and on the palate there’s a great combo of savory notes and CA fruit. I agree that there’s still a youthful green note—we’ll see if that dissipates over time.

Bought this upon returning from Portugal, having enjoyed several Duoro wines. This is a good value—somewhat similar in weight and flavor to a Côtes du Rhône. Nice everyday wine, I’d buy it again.

Popped and poured, maybe the slightest bit of VA at first, but that eased off. Each sip seemed light in weight initially, with bright red fruits then giving way to a savory, briny note. Just a really interesting wine, and as others have mentioned, so unlike most California wines. I’d be impressed if anyone tasted this blind and had any idea it was Napa Valley.

Funny, I thought I’d grabbed a 2019 from the cellar but instead it was a 2018. Only 2 left…

Notes are consistent with previous. Day one, zippy and acid forward, more primary. Day two, more herbal, darker, savory.

Just a great wine and an incredible value.

Pours lighter than I expected. On the palate, light red fruits, an herbal note and bit of spice. Lighter in weight than the 14.6% alcohol content…good acidity and a long finish…really good. Wish I had more.

Opened two 1.5 L for Christmas Eve party. Decanted but just briefly as I wasn’t sure what this would be like after a couple of hours.

Probably due to the format, this was very young in appearance and taste…but not so tannic that it seemed to put off any of the wine novices at the party. Overall, was as crowd pleasing as Nebbiolo gets, IMO—bright red fruits with a floral note and a hint of spice. Big hit.

This was given to me by a friend—it came from the cellar of a relative who had passed away. He said it had likely been stored well over the years, but the label showed some evidence of humidity or water damage.

I decanted the bottle about 3 hrs before dinner and it showed quite a bit of bricking, almost browning around the rim, with a dark ruby core. But initially it was very closed off, with almost no aroma whatsoever…I wasn’t sure there was any life left.

By dinner, however, the wine had opened up and was glorious. Almost a mushroom like scent alongside red fruits. And the palate was similar—bright and dark red fruits were still there, with good acidity and a long, long finish. What a treat, and probably my WOTY.
