A light, crunchy, pepper and fruit nose here, albeit with a rather steely, metallic edge. Clean, uncomplicated, with soft acidity and some nice flesh. This is a rather subtly styled wine, perhaps rather neutral in terms of character, but it is certainly drinkable. Surprisingly, this wine has spent time in oak - happily it didn't show through on this tasting. 14.5 points

Yet another couple of bottles of this great value and crowd-pleasing sparkler have been popped and poured. Lots of lemony, papery, chalky, dusty, steely-stony fruit on the nose, with a little citrus and mango richness. A fresh and crisply defined palate, full of exotic notes of mango again, of tangerine, with that mineral vein as suggested by the nose. Always bright, with thyme complexity, and slightly perfumed notes. really great value for money, and a real delight to drink. 17 points

A fabulous if rather pale onion skin hue in the bottle, which is clear glass, and once in the glass it displays a bone-white foam. The bead is moderate to fat, foamy and youthful, and the nose shows the aromas of cream over red fruits, with a notes of redcurrant leaf. On the palate it is firmly acidic, with strawberry fruit and a sharp mousse. There is a nice vinosity underneath the acidity, and a good if rather sharp finish. My main trouble with it is that it too strongly suggests under-ripe fruit to my palate. Nevertheless it is sappy and mouth-watering, lean and moderately rather than richly concentrated, and it makes a pleasing aperitif which would be best served well chilled in a warm summer garden rather than in the depths of winter I think. 15 points

Juicy fruit here, perhaps slightly gravelly, light and fun, plump, wild and herbal too. The same character comes through on the palate, first juicy but then more oily, soft and squishy, lacking definition and clarity of flavour, with some burnt fruit notes. Some decent, slightly chewy tannins are in its favour, though. 13.5 points

A pale lemon-gold hue, youthful in appearance, a thought reinforced by this wine's abundant bead. The nose has fresh, lemony, stony frut which really holds my attention, and this is followed up by little nuances, part peppery and spicy, part exotic and ripe, rather like mango or tangerine. These are very subtle seasonings, however, and the main character of the wine is one of cool climate minerality. The palate has a beautifully creamy character, with a delictae sherbet-tinged meat underneath it, and nuances of those fruits again, but once more it is predominantly lemon, steel, chalk and stone that prevails. What a delicious and appealing, easy-drinking wine. This is full of life and vitality, and is certainly even more impressive than the 2003 vintage. 17 points

This 100% Chardonnay cuvée is the same that I tasted a few months ago, and it is showing very consistently today. There is still a huge foaming bead, and aromas of fresh lemon, polished oak and cashew nut, as I noted previously. And on the palate it has a very crisp and upright nature, with a firm but very pleasing mousse, and plenty of acidity in the middle. What I didn't notice last time was a little note of candied fruit at the finish, and a slightly more creamy, polished finish with a little depth too, which I really like; these characteristics may represent serving temperature (a little less cool this time) more than anything else. This is very good indeed. 16.5+ points

This wine has a dark and maturing hue, and on the nose a pleasingly mature character, with violets, sweet and roasted fruits, all presented in quite a pure, lifted, perfumed and minerally fashion. There is a nice texture apparent on entry, with some really very good flesh and richness in the midpalate. There is still a nice backbone of tannins, which also come out at the edge of the wine, but overall this is a very well integrated mouthful with smoothly polished corners. There is good substance right to the finish, and little nuances of tobacco alongside the fruit. Overall I am impressed, and perhaps more importantly although fully mature there is no urgent need to drink up. That's good - I have the best part of a case to drink yet.. 17.5+ points

I'm afraid Churchill usually tends to have a style I don't really admire, and this bottle seems true to form. It has a firm, old-school, meaty and feral, wild and animally nose. There is a fat and somewhat sweet texture on the palate, although not as sweet as you might expect. It has some heat, not an adequate concentration of fruit for me, other than some dusty, dried berries, but it does have plenty of grip. 14 points

The last of the bottles from a case of this I bought at a bargain price, but really quite mature and in need of drinking up. Nevertheless, these bottles have performed well, have given some lovely drinking experiences, and have shown none of the oxidation problems that have beleaguered Burgundy in recent years. This has a rich, golden hue now, and a nose of honey, walnut and polished wood. A nice weight on the palate, just relaxing into a slightly more fleshy midpalate, but whereas this part displays a lovely woody-nutty character, it is incredibly dry at the finish and, ergo, the wine is beginning to dry out. Stylistically, firm and still giving pleasure even at this stage. Not a long finish though. Good, but I can't quite bring myself to dish out the same score as previous. Drink up, soon, if you have any. 16.5 points

An opener to the tasting, alongside a Champagne from Ruffin et Fils which sadly I missed. This has a clean, apple-skin nose, with some notes of herby banana. Crisp and lively on the palate, well defined, with firm and vivacious acidity. Really fresh and full of spirit, with a nicely polished finish. Despite that banana-shaped nose I find this fairly attractive. 15.5 points

Purchased Autumn 2008. A rich colour here, and a fairly fine and plentiful bead. This particular cuvée is 85% Pinot Noir, and that certainly shows on the nose, which starts off with the aromas of autumnal, red-skinned dessert apples, followed up by even warmer tones of cashew nuts, freshly baked bread and biscuits. The palate is fleshy and round, and has that typical Pinot character, a meaty depth to the texture and flavours of nutty apples. There is some good acidity to balance out this rich character, showing fairly firmly on the finish, and with a soft and gentle, creamy mousse. Really attractive and individual drinking here. 17+ points

A furry, animally, toffee-tinged nose here, with stewed-baked plum aromas. It has some nice texture on the palate, mellow but with some substance underneath it, overall quite soft and gently polished, with no hard edges. A gentle grip and rather subdued acidity, the grip building more towards the finish. There is a suggestion of Brett running through this wine, and if not Brett certainly some distinctive tertiary characteristics. Apparently this estate is run by the Borie family, better known for their tenure of Ducru-Beaucaillou, which is a surprise. An interesting wine. 14.5 points

2004 Château Faîteau Minervois-La Livinière

Mourvedre Blend, Mourvedre more

December 2008
The appellation of La Livinière, essentially a cru of Minervois, was legally delimited in 1999. The wines must comprise at least 60% Syrah, Grenache or Mourvèdre, of which the first two must account for at least 40%. This wine fits the bill, being 70% Syrah and 15% each Carignan and Grenache. It has plenty of sweet, somewhat baked fruit on the nose. The palate has a moderately firm entry, with plenty of warm Southern character, and a full and mouhfilling midpalate. It is well defined and bright, rather than creamy or overly plush. It is fresh, full of fruit, perhaps a touch macerated, with notes of sweet, herby friut from the Grenache. There is a good grippy structure underneath, with a little bitter, tea-leaf tannin; I suspect this could go a few years in the cellar. Very good indeed. 16.5+ points

Predominantly Syrah, I rather liked the 2004 vintage, which had a rather nice structure and bitter tea-leaf flavour. The 2005 is a different kettle of fish, with a nose of sweet, smoky, toffee-laced fruit. It has a good colour too. There is good substance on the palate, with a touch of cream, but here the toasty, marshmallowy oak comes through more than the fruit, which is a shame. It has a nice structure though. Perhaps some time in the cellar would allow the fruit to shine through a little more? 14.5+? points

Just a brief note on this wine. It has a good colour, with fresh fruit aromas dominating on the nose, especially plums, with a smoky twist. The palate seems beautifully composed, very fresh in character, showing fruit first, and then a more savoury midpalate. Towards the finish where the structure of tannins and acidity show fairly plainly there is a little bitter twist which I find attractive. Overall this has a lovely, savoury, mouth-filling, well-balanced character, and it has fine potential for the future I think. 17.5+ points

This is very unusual - a blend of 2005 and 2008 vintages - "declassified Brunello", I am told. It has a maturing hue, and an interesting nose, of wood-smoke and floral-cherry fruit, with nuances of tar and smoked meats. On the palate it has a leaner, tauter composition than I expected, but it has substance, and a polished character. It holds up very nicely in the mouth, and has a firm, appealingly bitter finish, spoilt a little by an oily fruit character here. Tannic too though, and I suspect this would repay cellaring. 15.5+ points

Bright and yellow-gold hue. Fabulous nose, dripping with fruit, melons and pears, with a very lifted and vivacious character. This holds true on the palate, which has flesh holding a wealth of tropical fruits, but with a welcome undercurrent of limey, spicy, lifted, spritzy acidity. Deliciously complete, very rounded and sweet, it holds together beautifully through to the lingering finish. Although way beyond the sweetness level classicists would demand, if you approach the wine with the knowledge this is a very sweet Kabinett, the wine is superb. It is amazing to think that when I last tasted this in a line up of 2005 wines, it was one of the fresher, balanced, zippy Kabinetts. 17.5+ points

This was purchased in Autumn 2003, so has had five years of bottle age in my cellar since release. The cork, solid and straight, displays this. A mid to pale golden hue in the glass, and a plentiful bead, with dozens of streams of tightly compacted, tiny bubbles. On the nose it seems quite quietly elegant, mostly subtle white fruits with a little nut and cream, and a smoky, mineral gorgeousness. On the palate is where I find the typical Krug richness and depth, with a meaty-creamy quality to the palate, although it remains elegantly fresh, with finely balanced acidity and a broad, walnutty character from start to finish. Incredibly well defined and lifted at the finish, like a spring morning, providing a delightful counterpoint to the richer midpalate. Very fine indeed. There seems to be no worry about leaving bottles of the 'multi-vintage' cuvée in the cellar five years at least. 18.5 points

Purchased Autumn 2005, so a little over three years in the cellar here. It has a good clean colour still, and a few streams of moderate-sized bubbles. A lovely nose, showing maturity, notes of coffee cream and baked herbs. But on the palate an immediate and crisp freshness, filling out to a gentle coffee-tinged and mushroom creaminess, with a delightful mousse throughout. It has a fresh acid backbone, appealing thyme-tinged midpalate, and a slightly bitter finish. A little short here, but immensely enjoyable and great value. And still room for improvement, I think. 16.5+ points

Purchased Summer 2003. Once in the glass this wine displayed a mid-golden hue, and a plentiful bead of small-moderate sized bubbles. The nose is rich, with aromas of roasted fruits, overlaid with caramel and toffee. It shows some evolution compared to my previous tasting five years ago when, just released, it was really very tight. The palate is rich and creamy, evolving nicely, with a fresh undercurrent of acidity and a bright, prickly mousse. It has a broad midpalate, mouth-filling, firm and flavoursome rather than ethereal. In fact although delicious it has a slightly meaty feel, but a well structured and bright finish. Whereas it has clearly moved on from its position five years ago, I am certain that this wine has much more potential yet, and I think a look in another five years might be warranted. And, sadly, looking at the price of current releases, that might just be my last look at Grand Siècle. 17.5+ points

The nose has the aroma of fresh rosemary, along with a sherbetty vibrancy of lime and minerals, all of which give the wine a fresh, vivacious and frankly delicious character. On the palate this vibrancy continues unabated. It carries a little touch of sweetness, but it is the sherbetly, minerally, tingling acidity that dominates the palate, and I love this. It continues into a fine, slightly sappy finish amid lots of flavour and character. This is an excellent value which offers plenty of pleasure, and which would make a truly refreshing palate-reviver if it should become somewhat overfaced by rich foods in the coming weeks. 17 points

Yet another bottle of this kabinett - with a synthetic cork, I wouldn't look for this wine to age. Fresh, sweet and appealing on the nose, with limey-chalky fruit. Rich but still fresh on the palate, lots of texture to it, nice although well-covered tingling acidity through the midpalate, and a huge amount of fruit flavour; apples, pears, clementines and more, all presented in a rich and juicy fashion. There's even a little cream with this fruit salad. Very easy to drink indeed. 16.5 points
